Aston Villa strengthened their push for Champions League qualification with a 1-0 victory over Brighton at Villa Park, secured by a late Jack Hinshelwood own-goal. The result moved Unai Emery's side onto 50 points and kept Aston Villa third in the Premier League, six points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea after Wednesday's tense contest.
Emery underlined how much the win meant after two recent home setbacks, stressing performance and mindset rather than league hype. "We needed to win," Emery said. "We needed to recover confidence through the result, to continue building the team in the structure we have, and those three points are really very important. "
Aston Villa had lost two successive league matches at Villa Park before facing Brighton, following
a sequence of eight straight home wins. Emery admitted that contrast in form, saying, "We lost two matches and had been feeling so strong here. We finished fantastically with the three points. " The head coach also stressed calm within the dressing room.
Emery avoided discussing rivals in the Champions League race, keeping attention on Aston Villa and forthcoming fixtures. "I don't want to speak about other teams; we are focusing on ourselves. " Emery added: "We are going to try to focus on each match. We [reached] 50 points, and it is fantastic. " The coach highlighted consistency as the main target.
Winger Leon Bailey, whose late corner produced the Hinshelwood own-goal, spoke openly about Aston Villa's ambitions on the European stage. Bailey told TNT Sports that "the Champions League is where we want to be," linking this season's push with the disappointment of narrowly missing out on qualification on the final day of the previous campaign.
Bailey reflected on how fine the margins have been at Villa Park in recent weeks and over the season. "It's massive. The Premier League is crazy, you never know what can take place," Bailey said. "If we had won the last two home games, we'd be in a great position. The Champions League positions is where we want to be. "
The winger also stressed how much the result means to supporters after a difficult spell on home soil. Bailey told TNT Sports: "[The win]was well-needed. It's been tough, the last few games here at home. Tonight was important, and we had to get the victory. Our fans can have something to go home and be happy about. "
Earlier in the season, Aston Villa reached the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition but missed out on a Champions League place in the league standings on the final day. This win over Brighton, achieved after two home defeats, helps repair momentum and keeps their bid for a return to the continent's top level firmly on track.

Aston Villa now occupy a strong position in the top-four race, combining a solid points tally with renewed belief at Villa Park after responding to setbacks. The narrow win over Brighton, shaped by Bailey's set-piece and Emery's emphasis on structure, keeps Champions League aspirations alive while leaving the squad focused on each match rather than the league table.
