Arsenal's pursuit of the Premier League title in the 2025-26 season is underpinned by a profound sense of belief and collective resilience, rather than external pressure.
Currently leading the standings with 53 points from 24 matches (16 wins, 5 draws, 3 losses), Mikel Arteta's side holds a six-point advantage over Manchester City (47 points) and a seven-point lead over Aston Villa (46 points), as the campaign enters its decisive phase.
That mindset is evident in Premier League Originals, where midfielders Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi shared candid insight into the hunger, resolve and defensive ethos shaping the campaign. Merino described his deliberate restraint during Zubimendi's transfer deliberations from Real Sociedad.
"I deliberately
avoided getting too involved; it's a deeply personal career choice. Moments like switching clubs, especially to a club as meaningful as Arsenal for him, belong to the individual. Of course, selfishly, I'm thrilled he's with us now and I get to enjoy playing alongside him on and off the pitch. But back then, it was his call to make, and he made it," Merino said while speaking with Jio Hotstar.
Merino further emphasized that Arsenal's defensive solidity derives from comprehensive, tireless effort beyond set-piece proficiency.
"We put in tremendous effort across the board, not only set-pieces as many assume, but every aspect. You see it in our pressing, how everyone dives into blocks, covers shots, or intercepts passes. Defence wins trophies, so I hope we keep this up," Merino said.
Confronting the club's prolonged wait for major silverware and successive near-misses, Merino highlighted the group's refusal to relent.
"After so long without the silverware, this group refuses to give up, unlike others who might think the chance has passed after four straight years of falling short. The originals who've been here from day one, are more driven than ever, while us newcomers arrive starving to contribute and slot right into the rhythm. I hope it's our year, but plenty remains, and winning in the Premier League or Champions League is brutally tough. One thing's certain: desire and effort won't be lacking," he added.
Zubimendi reinforced this perspective, viewing proximity to success as a catalyst for heightened motivation.
"It's been years since Arsenal were this close to their goal, and rather than pressure, it's become pure motivation for what's ahead. I see the team hungrier than ever, and coach Mikel Arteta, who's been with us for years, even more driven," Zubimendi concluded.
Amid recent challenges, including a setback against Manchester United and Merino's foot injury requiring surgery, the feature reveals an Arsenal squad fortified by appetite, defensive rigor, and an unwavering commitment to transcend past disappointments, positioning them strongly for a potential championship breakthrough.
