India's greatest gymnast Dipa Karmakar believes coaching has proved more demanding than competing, as the former Olympian begins the next chapter of her career with a renewed mission to build India's next generation of medal contenders.
Nearly a decade after rewriting history at the Rio Olympics, Karmakar says her biggest challenge is no longer executing difficult vaults, but managing the emotions, expectations and well-being of young athletes who now look to her for guidance.
"Now I think about an entire team"
Karmakar officially retired from competitive gymnastics in 2024 after a career that transformed the sport in India.
She became the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic gymnastics final with her fourth-place finish in the vault at Rio 2016 and gained worldwide recognition
for successfully landing the highly difficult Produnova vault. She also became India's first Asian champion in gymnastics and won a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in Glasgow.
Now, however, her focus has shifted entirely.
Reflecting on her transition from athlete to coach, Karmakar admitted the role has been far more complex than she imagined.
"I think this is a very tough job I chose. As a coach, earlier I only had to think about myself. Now I think about four or five team members-what they are thinking, what they are eating, whether they are resting, everything," she said.
She explained that many of her young gymnasts are away from home for the first time, making emotional support just as important as technical coaching.
"Sometimes they cry because they are competing against countries like China and Japan. Managing athletes is very difficult, but I am really happy. I enjoy this moment because gymnastics is in my blood. "
From chasing medals to building medal winners
Karmakar recently completed the World Gymnastics Academy Artistic Level 1 Coaches Education programme and made her international coaching debut with India's junior women's team at the Junior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in China.
She is currently coaching at the Netaji Subhash Regional Coaching Centre (NSRCC) in Tripura and has also led a month-long camp at the Odisha AM/NS India Gymnastics High-Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar.
Her current group includes Paromita Bera, Shreya Ghosh, Ananya Gupta, Anusua Howlader and Shreyanshi Roy, with one of her trainees already earning selection for the Asian Championships.
Karmakar revealed that despite her own achievements, she still turns to longtime mentor Bishweshwar Nandi for advice as she learns the demands of coaching.
"I always ask Sir, 'I'm doing coaching now. What should I do next?' He tells me to stay calm. He says if my students perform better than I did, then I will become a successful coach. "
Dipa Karmakar says mental strength matters as much as talent
One of the biggest lessons Karmakar has taken from her own career is the importance of an athlete's mindset.
She believes coaches spend as much time managing confidence and emotions as refining routines.
"If she is mentally fit, then she can do everything. If she is mentally strong, then there will be fewer disturbances in performance. Mental balance is the main thing. "
That philosophy has become central to her coaching as she prepares young gymnasts for international competition.
Managing parents has become the unexpected challenge
While coaching children has brought fresh motivation, Karmakar admitted that managing parental expectations has often been harder than working with the athletes themselves.
She recalled conversations with parents eager to know how quickly their children could reach the Olympics.
"Parents ask, 'When will my girl go to the Olympics?' But it doesn't happen like that. We have to go step by step. The athletes understand that, but sometimes parents expect it to happen within a year. "
For Karmakar, patience remains the foundation of long-term success in gymnastics.
Her mission is bigger than producing another Dipa Karmakar
The 31-year-old has made no secret of her ambition to help India emerge as a consistent force in international gymnastics, with an eye on the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India.
She believes sustained success will come through investment at the grassroots level and by developing athletes over several years rather than chasing immediate results.
Asked what she hopes to give back to the sport, Karmakar said coaching is ultimately a partnership.
"Coach is 50 per cent and the student is 50 per cent. Together it becomes 100 per cent. That is how you win medals. "
Her message to every young gymnast remains simple.
"If you do hard work smartly and patiently, you will always become a champion because hard work always pays off. "
For the gymnast who once carried India's Olympic hopes on her shoulders, success is no longer measured by her own medals. It is now defined by how many athletes she can inspire to stand on the podium in the years ahead.
