Portugal eased to a 2-0 win over the United States in a World Cup warm-up, with Bruno Fernandes directing the contest. Fernandes supplied assists for both goals in Lisbon. Cristiano Ronaldo missed out again through injury, but Portugal still responded well after a goalless draw against Mexico earlier in the week.
The United States recorded more attempts than Portugal yet finished without a goal. Portugal showed greater quality in key moments, especially through Fernandes in advanced areas. Matt Freese kept the score down with several strong saves, while Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie could not convert promising attacking positions for the visitors.
Fernandes produced an all-round display that matched recent form for Manchester United. Fernandes has
already supplied 16 Premier League assists this season. Against the United States, Fernandes created two chances and both became goals. Fernandes also had a game-high 75 touches, plus 20 passes played in the final third.
No player on either team sent in more crosses than Fernandes, who delivered five in total. Portugal relied on that creativity with Ronaldo unavailable again. The United States struggled with finishing, attempting 12 shots compared with Portugal’s 11. However, only three United States efforts tested the goalkeeper across the ninety minutes.
Expected goals numbers reflected a fairly balanced friendly. The United States posted 0.68 xG, close to Portugal’s 0.74. The difference came in conversion and decision-making near goal. Portugal struck twice from fewer shots, while the United States wasted several promising openings with inaccurate attempts from good positions.
Portugal’s breakthrough arrived after an open first half. McKennie headed wide and Freese denied Fernandes during an early spell of pressure at both ends. Pulisic then fired just past the post after cutting inside. Portugal punished that miss on 37 minutes when Fernandes ran behind the defence and backheeled for Trincao to finish low into the bottom-right corner.
The second goal followed shortly before the hour. Fernandes again found space on the right and pulled the ball back to Joao Felix on the edge of the area. The substitute controlled on the chest, then drove a half-volley in off the post. The United States could not reply, while Ruben Neves drew another strong save from Freese with a long-range strike.
Portugal stayed in control during the final stages, although the scoreline stayed at 2-0. Francisco Conceicao nearly added a third in stoppage time, but Freese pushed away a tight-angled shot that seemed destined for the far corner. The performance gave Portugal renewed confidence, while the United States again faced questions about wasteful finishing before the World Cup.
