In a crucial match of IPL 2026 at Eden Gardens on May 20, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 4 wickets with 7 balls to spare, boosting their playoff aspirations in a congested bottom-half table.
KKR elected to bowl first after winning the toss. MI struggled early against disciplined bowling and posted a modest 147/8 in 20 overs.
MI's innings faltered with early blows. Cameron Green claimed two quick wickets, while Saurabh Dubey removed Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya (26) and Tilak Varma (20) provided some resistance, but Sunil Narine and Kartik Tyagi kept the pressure on. Corbin Bosch's unbeaten 32 offered a late flourish, yet MI never built momentum.
Chasing 148, KKR faced early hiccups but Manish Pandey
anchored with a composed 45 off 33 balls (Player of the Match). Rovman Powell contributed a quick 40, and Rinku Singh provided the finishing touch. KKR crossed the line in 18.5 overs. Corbin Bosch took 3/30 for MI but it wasn't enough.
KKR IPL Playoff Qualification Scenario
KKR now sit level on points with PBKS but trail RR. With one match left (vs DC), they can reach a maximum of 15 points.
- Best Case (15 points): Win vs DC by a big margin to improve NRR. PBKS must lose or draw their remaining game(s), and ideally RR or another mid-table side drops points. This could push KKR into the top 4 on NRR or tie-breakers.
- At 13 points (if they win vs DC but with poor NRR): Extremely tough. Multiple teams (RR, PBKS, CSK) would need to falter significantly. NRR would become critical; KKR would need a massive victory margin.
How can KKR qualify for Playoffs?
Kolkata Knight Riders will need two results going in their way in order for qualification. As the Knight Riders will play the final group stage match of the season, they will be taking field with the scenarios known to them.
But they will only be alive in the playoff race if Rajasthan Royals lose their last match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, the match just before KKR's in the evening. Similarly, even if Punjab Kings win against LSG, KKR would ideally want a narrow margin for the Kings.
