Newcastle United's manager, Eddie Howe, has disclosed that Dan Burn will be sidelined for up to six weeks. The seasoned defender sustained injuries to his rib and lung during a 1-0 derby loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. This occurred after a first-half collision with Nordi Mukiele, who received a booking for the challenge.
Howe expressed his disappointment over Burn's absence, stating, "It was a big blow for us because I think he's been excellent in recent weeks. " He elaborated on the nature of Burn's injuries, mentioning both rib and lung issues. Howe hopes for Burn's swift recovery as they prepare for the EFL Cup quarter-final against Fulham.
The defensive line is currently a concern for Newcastle due to several key players being
unavailable. Sven Botman remains out, while Emil Krafth and Kieran Trippier are not expected back until the new year. Despite these setbacks, Nick Pope might be ready to face Fulham.
Howe commented on the situation by saying, "We don't have many injuries, but we have a concentrated group of players out who all play the same position. " He also noted that Jamaal Lascelles is returning from a muscle issue and is now fit and training with the team.
11 - Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle had the fewest shots (11) and lowest xG total (0.53) of any Premier League match this season. Indeed, the 11 shots were the fewest in a single game in the competition since March 2023 (Aston Villa v Crystal Palace). Battle. pic.twitter.com/Toy3VZggt8 OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) December 14, 2025
Newcastle's recent performance has seen them struggle defensively, failing to keep a clean sheet in nine consecutive top-flight matches. This equals their longest streak without one under Howe's management. Additionally, Nick Woltemade became only the second player to score an own goal in a Tyne-Wear derby within the Premier League.
Eddie Howe addressed Woltemade's unfortunate moment by saying, "Nick is going to have to deal with that moment; it was an unfortunate one for him. " He reassured that Woltemade was attempting to manage the cross correctly and believes he will overcome this setback.
Pursuing Success Despite Setbacks
Despite these challenges, Newcastle remains focused on their goals. They aim to defend their EFL Cup title while currently sitting 12th in the Premier League standings. However, they are just four points away from fifth place.
Howe reflected on the season's difficulties: "I think every season is a challenge; nothing is ever easy. " He emphasized finding solutions as crucial when facing team problems or game aspects needing improvement.
The coach stressed maintaining positivity at the training ground and working hard towards solutions as essential strategies for overcoming current hurdles.
