New Delhi, April 10: India delivered a commanding performance to blank Mongolia 3-0 in their Asia/Oceania Group I tie of the Billie Jean King Cup on Friday, dropping just one game across all matches at the DLTA Complex.
Leading the charge, Zeel Desai made a stunning singles debut for India, overpowering 15-year-old Anu-Vjin Gantor 6-0, 6-0 in just 37 minutes. Desai's dominant display set the tone for the tie, as she barely put a foot wrong against an inexperienced opponent.
Sahaja Yamalapalli followed up with an equally emphatic victory, thrashing Jargal Altansarnai by the same 6-0, 6-0 margin in 42 minutes to seal the tie for India.
The doubles pairing of Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale completed the rout, beating Khongorzul Aldarkhishig and Altansarnai
6-1, 6-0 in a one-sided contest.
India's players faced little resistance from their unranked Mongolian counterparts, turning the tie into a near one-sided affair. The hosts now turn their attention to a crucial clash against Korea on Saturday, which could determine their chances of advancing to the playoffs.
For India to qualify, they must register another 3-0 win over Korea and hope Indonesia defeats Korea in a separate tie. The earlier loss to Thailand has complicated India's path to a top-two finish, which is required to progress to the playoffs.
Captain Vishal Uppal stressed the importance of focusing on the upcoming match rather than dwelling on past setbacks.
"We're not going to think about that (Thailand defeat). It's important that we go out and beat Korea tomorrow. Whether we make the playoffs or not is secondary," Uppal said, adding that such matches are valuable for the team's younger players.
Reflecting on her earlier loss against Thailand, Adkar admitted that nerves played a key role. "It was more about the mental part. It was my first time on such a big stage, and I didn't handle it well," she said.
Desai, who was fielded to gain match experience, expressed satisfaction with her performance. "We had specific things to work on, and I think I executed them well," she noted.
With momentum on their side after this dominant win, India will look to carry forward the confidence into their final group-stage encounter and keep their playoff hopes alive.
