India may have arrived in England with one eye on the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup, but their opening match of the series offered plenty of encouraging signs beyond the result itself. While the win gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, it also provided valuable answers around squad depth, player form and selection options less than three weeks before the global tournament begins.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia rescue India after a nightmare start
India were reduced to 7/2 in the opening over after Lauren Bell dismissed Smriti Mandhana
and Shafali Verma. However, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues completely changed the course of the innings with a match-defining 126-run partnership for the third wicket.
Rodrigues anchored the innings with a composed 69 off 40 balls, while Yastika marked her return to the T20I side with a fluent 54 off 40 deliveries, registering her maiden T20I half-century.
Yastika Bhatia makes a strong comeback statement
Playing her first T20I since April 2024 after recovering from knee surgery, Yastika looked in complete control throughout her innings.
She reached her fifty in just 31 balls and showed intent against both pace and spin. With the Women's T20 World Cup just around the corner, her return gives India another reliable top-order option and strengthens competition for places.
Jemimah continues her excellent T20 form
Rodrigues once again demonstrated why she remains one of India's most dependable T20 batters. Her 69 was built on timing, placement and smart strike rotation rather than brute force.
The innings also highlighted her growing responsibility in India's middle order, especially with several senior players being rested or rotated ahead of the World Cup.
Nandani Sharma enjoys dream international debut
The biggest positive for India with the ball was debutant Nandani Sharma.
The 24-year-old seamer finished with 3/34 and triggered England's collapse by removing the dangerous Amy Jones. She then struck again on the very next ball and came within one delivery of a debut hat-trick.
With India continuing to search for bowling depth ahead of the World Cup, Nandani could hardly have asked for a better start to her international career.
Amy Jones' promotion works for England
One of the few bright spots for England was Amy Jones' performance at No. 3.
Jones scored 67 off 48 balls, hitting nine boundaries and holding the innings together after early wickets. Her knock suggested England may have found a viable middle-order option while they continue managing injuries and personnel changes.
England's fielding cost them dearly
The hosts were sloppy in the field throughout India's innings. Several missed opportunities and misfields allowed Rodrigues and Yastika to build momentum during their century stand.
England eventually pulled things back after both batters departed, but the damage had already been done.

With Harmanpreet Kaur rested and several players getting opportunities, India still posted 188/7 and defended it comfortably.
