Jaipur, Nov 25: Cyclist Meenakshi Rohilla of Guru Nanak Dev University clinched the first gold medal of the , setting the tone for an action-packed opening day on Tuesday (November 25) in which 25 gold medals were decided across cycling, swimming, shooting, fencing and weightlifting.
Powered by a dominant swimming performance, Jain University surged to the top of the medals table with a commanding haul of eight gold medals, all coming from the pool. Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) also opened their accounts with strong showings.
The fifth edition of KIUG, being held across seven cities in Rajasthan, features 4448 athletes from 222 universities competing across 23 sporting disciplines. The Games are being conducted
jointly by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Rajasthan Government and the State Sports Council, and hosted by Poornima University.
Top Performances of the Day
1. Srihari Nataraj's Triple-Gold Masterclass
Olympian Srihari Nataraj produced one of the standout performances of the opening day, picking up three gold medals - two individually (100m backstroke, 50m freestyle) and one in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay. His times of 58.25s (100m backstroke) and 23.79s (50m freestyle) underlined his dominance.
2. Meenakshi Rohilla Creates Games History
With cycling making its debut at the KIUG, Meenakshi became the first-ever cycling gold medallist in the event's history. She won the 30km Individual Time Trial with a superb 00:45:31.907, averaging 39.5 km/hr.
3. LPU's Sakshi Padekar Shines in Shooting
LPU shooter Sakshi Padekar won the women's 10m Air Rifle gold with a score of 253.2, after topping qualification with 633.5. She also led LPU to the team gold.
4. Weightlifting Stars Rise to the Occasion
Shivaji University's Kajol Sargar lifted a total of 158kg to win the women's 48kg gold. LPU's Golom Tinku dominated the men's 61kg category with 256kg, while Bornali Borah took gold in the women's 53kg with 168kg.
5. GNDU Fencers Claim Double Gold
GNDU continued its fencing excellence with golds from Mitvaben Chaudhari (women's Epee) and Aakhri (women's Saber), contributing to their strong start.
