Junior national champion Hansini Mathan delivered a shock upset by defeating third seed Yoo Yerin of Korea Republic 11-8, 11-3, 11-9 in the women's singles first round at the WTT Feeder Series 2026 at Vadodara's SAMA Indoor Sports Complex on Friday.
The inaugural Vadodara event, hosted by the Table Tennis Association of Baroda and implemented by Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), saw more drama in mixed doubles, where Payas Jain and Syndrela Das overcame top seeds Akash Pal and Poymantee Baisya 4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6 after a shaky start.
The 16-year-old Hansini, India's youngest-ever junior national champion, peaked against world No. 78 Yoo and now faces Ryu Hanna of Korea Republic in the pre-quarterfinals. Hanna edged young Indian Tanishka Kalbhairav
7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9.
Hansini also shone in women's doubles, partnering Sampada Bhiwandkar to topple third seeds Anusha Kutumbale and Baisya 9-11, 15-13, 11-4, 6-11, 12-10.
Men's Singles Highlights
Priyanuj Bhattacharya ousted eighth seed Navid Shams of Iran 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 and will clash with Yashansh Malik next. Top seeds advanced too: Manush Shah crushed qualifier Parth Magar 11-7, 11-4, 11-4; Snehit Suravajjula downed wild card Pratham Madlani 11-5, 11-7, 11-3; and Ankur Bhattacharjee beat Abhinandh Pradhivadhi 11-6, 3-11, 11-6, 11-6.
Local hero Manush from Baroda dominated early, surging to a 5-2 lead in the opener and reeling off six straight points from 5-4 in the second.
In pre-quarterfinals, Bhattacharjee meets Mudit Dani (who beat Ved Sheth 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6), while Snehit takes on Divyansh Srivastava (11-6, 11-9, 11-4 over qualifier Balamurugan Rajasekaran).
Syndrela, Divyanshi through to Round of 16
In the evening matches, Syndrela Das secured a comfortable straight-set victory over Naisha Rewaskar, while Divyanshi Bhowmick went past the hurdle against Suhana Saini.
Syndrela and Divyanshi lost their women's doubles match earlier in the afternoon, but roared back in the singles event. Despite a slow start in the first set, Syndrela won it 11-9, and then backed it up with 11-6, 11-2 wins to seal the deal.
For Divyanshi, the win came in four sets. She lost the first set 8-11 to Saini but came back strongly 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 to clinch her match. The Bengali girl are set for more challenges in the Round of 16, as Syndrela face Yashini Sivasankar while Divyanshi takes on Park Gahyeon of South Korea.
