Rory McIlroy opened the 2026 season with a strong statement, taking the first-round lead at the Dubai Invitational after shooting a five-under-par 66 at Dubai Creek Resort. Starting on the back nine, McIlroy made six birdies and finished the day one stroke ahead of Scotland's Connor Syme in the early standings.
Conditions became tougher on McIlroy's inward half, where stronger wind on the front nine limited further progress. McIlroy managed only one birdie there, dropped a shot at the third hole, and felt several chances slipped away. Despite that, McIlroy still described the day as a positive opening to the year in Dubai.
The round came in McIlroy's first competitive start since completing the career Grand Slam with victory at the 2025 Masters.
McIlroy said that success had not reduced drive or focus. Instead, McIlroy explained that a long-term commitment to work and routine continues to shape approach and identity as a player.
"I like the work and like the process,McIlroy told Sky Sports. I enjoy doing challenging things and I think if you can make that the important part and make it routine, you don't need motivation to do it. It's your lifestyle and what you do. I guess it's who you identify as and I identify as a hard worker and someone who likes to do those things. The more you do that, the more it becomes who you are. I've done it for so long now that if I didn't do it, it would feel pretty foreign. "

Behind McIlroy, Connor Syme sits at four under par, one behind the leader. Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry are part of a group tied for ninth on two under. McIlroy is also debuting new gold balls and irons this week, adding another variable to the opening event of the 2026 campaign.
| Player | Score | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Rory McIlroy | -5 (66) | 1st |
| Connor Syme | -4 | 2nd |
| Tommy Fleetwood | -2 | T9 |
| Shane Lowry | -2 | T9 |
McIlroy, the current Race to Dubai champion, believed the low round could have been even better after the fast start on the back nine. The front nine, which McIlroy played second, felt more demanding in the breeze, especially around the early holes where scoring chances were harder to convert.
"It was good. I got off to a great start, added McIlroy, who is the current Race to Dubai champion. I played a very good first nine. The wind got up a little bit and it felt like that front nine was the trickier one. I made a silly bogey on three and didn't capitalise on the par-five after that, so I felt like I left a few on that side. But I played a really good nine holes of golf going out. Overall, a nice way to start the year. "
With a narrow advantage over Syme and a chasing pack that includes Fleetwood and Lowry, McIlroy carries both confidence and caution into the next round at Dubai Creek Resort. The five-under start, combined with long-term work habits and recent major success, sets a strong early platform for the rest of the Dubai Invitational week.
