Udaipur, Sep 6: The sun had not fully cleared the Aravallis when the Field Club grounds began to fill on Sunday (September 6) morning. It was not the usual pre-dawn scramble of a race day. The weather was kind, cool enough to hold, and it showed in the crowd that gathered for Hindustan Zinc's 3rd Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur.
Grandparents in tracksuits stood next to college students stretching against the railings. In the 10 km and 5 km lines especially, a small but telling sight kept repeating itself: parents jogging up with infants perched on their shoulders, some embraced in their arms, unwilling to let a marathon morning become an excuse to skip family time. It was a scene that said more about where this event has reached than
any number could, though the numbers, when they came, were not modest either.
By the time the gun went off, more than 9700 runners were on the move, on-ground and virtual combined, a nearly 45 percent jump from last year's edition. Three years ago this was a local fitness event finding its feet. On Sunday, it looked and felt like something else entirely, a race that has quietly outgrown its own ambitions.
From a City Event to a Movement
Numbers alone rarely tell the full story, but these ones are worth sitting with. Runners travelled in from 27 Indian states and six countries, turning Udaipur's lakeside roads into a genuinely global start line for a morning.
Fitness communities from Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram made the trip, and they were joined by participants who had flown in from the United States, Sweden, Italy, Japan, Indonesia and Kenya. For a race built around a single city's identity, that is an unusual spread, and it is growing wider with each edition.
Billed as India's Most Beautiful Marathon, the course did what it always promises. The 21.097 km, 10 km and 5 km routes wound past Fateh Sagar Lake with the Aravalli ranges standing guard in the background, and Udaipur's residents turned out early to line the streets and cheer runners through some of the city's most photographed stretches. The scenery has become the race's calling card, but this year the story was as much about who was running as where.
That inclusiveness had a deliberate structure to it. Alongside the three competitive categories, the marathon featured a Champions Race built specifically for communities from rural Rajasthan and Udaipur, along with students of Shiksha Sambal, Hindustan Zinc's education initiative. Senior citizens, women-led fitness groups, corporate teams and specially-abled participants filled out the rest of the field.
One of the best thing about this race was that competitive marathoners, chasing personal bests, shared the same start line as first-timers who had never run more than a few kilometres before this year. Few races manage to hold both crowds comfortably. This one has made it a habit.
A Race With Something to Say
The event carried a civic weight this year that went beyond fitness. With Rajasthan's municipal elections approaching, the marathon, promoted by Anybody Can Run (ABCR), doubled as a platform urging citizens to step out and vote, folding a democratic nudge into a morning otherwise built around personal bests and finish-line photographs. It is an unusual pairing, sport and civic duty, but one that fit the marathon's growing sense of itself as more than a running event.
Runners also carried forward the #RunForZeroHunger initiative through the course, turning every stride into part of a larger cause rather than just a personal milestone. It is this layering, fitness, community, civic participation and social purpose stacked one on top of another, that has allowed the race to keep expanding its meaning even as it expands its numbers.
Mr. Amarendu Prakash, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, framed the growth in terms that went beyond the leaderboard. "Seeing over 9700 runners come together in Udaipur is a powerful reflection of how far this marathon has come in just three editions," he said.

Our ambition is to see India's Most Beautiful Marathon emerge among the country's most sought-after running experiences and take the spirit of Zinc City to the world. "
Zinc, Legacy, and a Medal That Means Something
Every finisher who crossed the line took home a medal cast from Hindustan Zinc's 99.99 percent pure zinc, a detail that connects the event to a much older story. Udaipur's relationship with zinc stretches back thousands of years, long before Hindustan Zinc became the world's largest integrated zinc producer and one of the top ten silver producers globally. The medal is a small object, but it does real work, tying a Sunday morning of sweat and sore legs to a regional history most runners probably never think about mid-stride.
On the results sheet, Mukesh Kumar took the men's half marathon title in 1:08:47, with Pooja topping the women's field in 1:26:09. In the 10 km race, Tehender clocked 32:01 for the men's win, while Kumari Parru led the women in 36:49. Behind those times sat thousands of quieter finishes, the recreational runners, the first-timers, the parents who had woken their children before sunrise to be part of something. The podium mattered, but it was not the whole race.
Beyond the Finish Line
The marathon's reach is no longer confined to a Sunday morning. Certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and now a fixture on the global marathon calendar, the event has started pulling its own economic weight, with runners, families and fitness communities filling hotels, restaurants and local businesses across the city in the days around the race. Udaipur's case for itself as a sports tourism destination gets a little stronger with each edition.
Three editions in, the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon has stopped being a simple fitness event and started resembling a small institution, one that carries a city's name, an ancient metal's legacy and a modern push toward civic participation, all inside the same finisher's medal.
Sunday's crowd at Field Club, kids on shoulders and all, suggested the appetite for it is nowhere near full. If the growth curve of the last three years holds, next year's start line may need an even bigger stretch of road.
