New Delhi, Dec 29: Indian sport witnessed a day of key developments across disciplines, with workload management in cricket, landmark individual achievements and major administrative decisions taking centre stage.
India's pacer Jasprit Bumrah and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya are set to be rested for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, while Shreyas Iyer could return to competitive action in domestic cricket.
Smriti Mandhana joined an elite list by becoming only the fourth batter to cross 10,000 runs in women's cricket. Elsewhere, the All India Football Federation continued discussions on the structure of the next Indian Super League season, former cricketer Robin Uthappa weighed in on Rajasthan Royals' leadership options, Nick Kyrgios
won a high-profile exhibition match in Dubai, Arjun Erigaisi claimed a historic bronze at the World Rapid Chess Championship, and the ICC labelled the Melbourne pitch used for the fourth Ashes Test as unsatisfactory.
1. Hardik-Bumrah set to be rested for NZ ODIs
India's pace ace Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya will sit out the three-match ODI series against New Zealand-kicking off January 11 in Baroda, then Rajkot (14th) and Indore (18th)-to preserve energy for the T20 World Cup campaign. They'll rejoin for the T20Is from January 21 in Nagpur. Pandya's ODI drought stretches back to the 2023 Champions Trophy finale amid fitness woes; Bumrah's last 50-over outing was the World Cup showpiece. Squad call-up due early January
2. Shreyas Iyer lined up for Vijay Hazare return
Post-surgery for a spleen issue that's kept him out since October, Shreyas Iyer could make his Mumbai comeback in the Vijay Hazare clash versus Maharashtra on January 3 in Jaipur, just before ODI selectors meet to pick squad for New Zealand ODIs. It's a fitness checkpoint ahead of the New Zealand ODIs but uncertainty lingers on his national squad spot.
3. Smriti Mandhana becomes 4th batter to 10,000 Runs
India women star Smriti Mandhana has become 4th batter to score 10,000 runs in women's cricket. Mandhana joined legends like Mithali Raj, Suzie Bates, and Charlotte Edwards, who have all aggregated a five-figure score in their career. Former India women's captain Mithali Raj holds the record of most runs in women's cricket.
Most Runs in Women's Cricket
- Mithali Raj (India): 10,868 runs in 314 innings
- Suzie Bates (New Zealand): 10,652 runs in 343 innings
- Charlotte Edwards (England): 10,273 runs in 316 innings
- Smriti Mandhana (India): 10,000 runs in 281 innings
4. ISL to be centralized as AIFF seeks AFC approval
The Indian Super League 2025-26 season remains a matter of further discussion as the clubs raised their concerns to AIFF regarding financial payments for the season. ISL this season is also set to be played across two venues- Kolkata and Goa. The clubs have also asked AIFF to forego relegation entirely, while the apex body seeks AFC's approval for regional places amid a truncated season.
5. Uthappa claims two players who can lead Rajasthan Royals
Former India player Robin Uthappa reckons Yashasvi Jaiswal is still a couple of years away from honing captaincy role for Rajasthan Royals. Jaiswal has been tipped to lead the Royals after Sanju Samson's departure to Chennai Super Kings, but Uthappa opines Riyan Parag would be the one leading them, while Ravindra Jadeja can also be appointed as leader for next season.
6. Kyrgios wins 'Battle of the Sexes' match against Sabalenka
In a highly anticipated "Battle of the Sexes" exhibition match held in Dubai on December 28, 2025, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios defeated women's world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The lighthearted showdown, a modern take on historic gender battles like Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs, featured Kyrgios's powerful serves and quick volleys overpowering Sabalenka's aggressive baseline play. The match, lasting under an hour, highlighted gender dynamics in tennis but was criticized by some as outdated or gimmicky.
7. Arjun Erigaisi wins Bronze in Rapid Chess Championship
Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi achieved a historic bronze medal at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha, scoring 9.5/13 points and becoming the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand to podium in the open section. Magnus Carlsen reclaimed gold with 10.5 points, while Vladislav Artemiev took silver on tiebreaks.
8. MCG pitch rated unsatisfactory by ICC
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has labelled the Melbourne pitch used for the fourth Ashes Test between England and Australia as unsatisfactory. The venue received one demerit point due to the pitch's excessive favouring of bowlers, according to match referee Jeff Crowe's report. England won the match by four wickets within two days.
In the first day alone, 20 wickets fell, followed by 16 on the second day, with no batter reaching a half-century. This led to the ICC's decision to classify the pitch as unsatisfactory, resulting in one demerit point for the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) under their Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.
