Rajasthan Royals have officially reinstated Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara as their head coach for the 2026 Indian Premier League season, marking a return to the role he previously held for four years.
The franchise confirmed the development on Monday, outlining a major reshuffle within both the coaching and player groups as they prepare for a high-stakes mega auction in December.
Sangakkara initially coached the Royals from 2021 to 2024 before transitioning to the director of cricket role last season, when Rahul Dravid served as head coach for IPL 2025. The Royals have now handed him the reins once again, signalling a move back toward a familiar and trusted leadership framework.
Alongside Sangakkara's return, the franchise announced a series of coaching shifts. Vikram Rathour has been promoted to lead assistant coach, offering additional experience to the support staff. Trevor Penney and Sid Lahiri will also rejoin the setup, resuming their positions as assistant coach and performance coach, respectively. Shane Bond, who came on board in 2024, will continue to oversee fast bowling duties.
Beyond the coaching bench, the Royals have executed one of the most notable trades ahead of the IPL 2026 auction by parting ways with long-time captain Sanju Samson. In a blockbuster exchange with Chennai Super Kings, the Royals secured the services of Ravindra Jadeja and England all-rounder Sam Curran, significantly strengthening their squad's balance and experience.
The shake-up reflects the franchise's broader push to reset its core and sharpen its competitiveness. "We have a clear understanding of where we want to go as a group, and our aim is to build a team that plays with clarity, resilience, and purpose," a team statement noted, capturing the intent behind the sweeping changes.
With the mega auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, the Royals are expected to be active as they assess areas requiring reinforcements. Having already completed major player moves and reinstated Sangakkara to his former role, the franchise appears poised to fine-tune its setup ahead of a crucial season.
