England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales have submitted a joint bid to host the 2035 Women's World Cup. This proposal includes 22 venues, with 16 located in England and six spread across the other three nations. Notable venues include Old Trafford, which is planned for redevelopment, and a proposed new stadium for Birmingham City.
Wembley Stadium is anticipated to host the final if FIFA approves the bid. Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium, already set as a venue for Euro 2028, is also part of the proposal. Windsor Park was initially considered for Euro 2028 but did not make the final list.
The bid highlights the inclusion of various stadiums across the UK. Six stadiums are proposed from Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. A joint statement from the CEOs of The FA, Irish FA, Scottish FA, and FA of Wales emphasized that hosting the Women's World Cup in the UK could significantly boost women's and girls' football both locally and globally. They stated: "A Women’s World Cup in the UK has the power to turbo charge the women’s and girls’ game both in the UK and globally. Our bid also demonstrates our commitment to leaving a lasting legacy, in the run up to 2035, and the years afterwards. "
The expansion of teams participating in future tournaments is noteworthy. From 2031 onwards, the Women's World Cup will feature 48 teams. This change aims to increase global participation and competition levels.
England's recent achievements in women's football add weight to their bid. They are two-time European champions and were runners-up at the 2023 Women's World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
The potential hosting of this prestigious event aligns with efforts to enhance women's sports infrastructure across these nations. It promises long-term benefits beyond just hosting matches.
