India signed off their Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia/Oceania Group I campaign with a 2-1 win over South Korea, but the result was not enough to secure a playoff berth after earlier setbacks proved costly at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association Stadium on Saturday.
Heading into the final tie, India required a flawless 3-0 victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. However, Ankita Raina's defeat in the opening singles match ended those hopes early, leaving the hosts out of contention despite winning the tie overall.
Early Setback Ends Qualification Hopes
India's path to the playoffs hinged on a perfect result, but the opening singles match dealt a decisive blow. Ankita Raina, ranked 581 in the WTA standings, went down to South Korea's Back Da-yeon, ranked 342, in straight sets.
Back
dominated the first set 6-1 before holding her composure in the second to close out the match 7-5 after one hour and 54 minutes. The defeat mathematically ended India's chances of breaking into the top two positions, regardless of the remaining results in the tie.
With that loss, the focus shifted from qualification to finishing the tournament strongly.
Adkar Keeps India Competitive in Singles
Vaishnavi Adkar ensured India remained competitive in the tie with a composed performance in the second singles match. Facing Park So-hyun, Adkar delivered under pressure in a tightly contested encounter decided by two tiebreaks.
The Indian player secured a 7(7)-6(2), 7(7)-6(5) victory, keeping India level in the tie and showcasing resilience in crucial moments. Her ability to hold nerve in extended rallies and pressure situations proved vital in forcing the contest into the doubles rubber.
Doubles Pair Seals Winning Finish
India closed the tie on a positive note as the experienced doubles pairing of Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale delivered a clinical performance in the final match.
The duo defeated Back Da-yeon and Lee Eun-hye 6-2, 6-2, completing a dominant display that ensured India ended their campaign with a win, even though the playoff opportunity had already slipped away.
The result confirmed India's third-place finish in the Asia/Oceania Group I standings with three wins and two losses.
Tournament Campaign Marked by Mixed Results
India's campaign began with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Thailand before bouncing back strongly with a 3-0 win over New Zealand. However, a 3-0 loss to Indonesia proved a turning point, placing the team under pressure heading into the final stretch.
They recovered with a commanding 3-0 victory against Mongolia, setting up a decisive final tie against South Korea. Despite finishing strongly, earlier defeats ultimately limited their chances of advancing.
Only the top two teams from the six-team round-robin group progressed to the playoffs, while teams finishing third and fourth retained their place in Group I.
A Step Back After Last Year's Progress
India's third-place finish marks a step back from last year's performance, when they finished runners-up behind New Zealand in the Asia/Oceania Group I stage to secure a playoff berth.
Their campaign in the playoffs last season ended with defeats to the Netherlands and Slovenia, but the 2026 edition highlighted the fine margins that separate qualification from elimination in a tightly contested group format.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the playoffs, India's ability to finish the tournament with a win provides a foundation to build on as they look ahead to future international campaigns.
