Japan moved to second in Group F with a ruthless 4-0 win over Tunisia at Estadio Monterrey, in what was the 1,000th World Cup match. Ayase Ueda scored twice and supplied one assist, while Tunisia’s defensive issues continued, leaving the team out of the tournament after only two games.
Tunisia’s campaign ended alongside Haiti and Turkiye, after back-to-back heavy defeats by Sweden and Japan. This loss came despite a coaching change after the first group match, something never seen before at a World Cup. Japan now turn attention to a key meeting with Sweden, holding strong momentum and a superior goal record.
Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed after Tunisia’s 5-1 defeat to Sweden on matchday one, with Herve Renard appointed in a bid to steady the side.
It was the first time in World Cup history a team changed coach after a single group fixture. Yet Renard, who led Morocco in 2018 and Saudi Arabia in 2022, could not reverse Tunisia’s slide.
This change meant Tunisia became only the fifth team to use more than one coach in the same World Cup. On each previous occasion, the incoming coach did not win their opening match, producing three draws and two defeats. Renard added another loss to that sequence, as Tunisia’s total of nine goals conceded at this tournament set a new unwanted national record.
Japan struck almost instantly. After four minutes, Keito Nakamura drove to the byline and delivered a low cross, which Daichi Kamada finished, giving Japan their fastest World Cup goal. Aymen Dahmen, starting instead of Abdelmouhib Chamakh, then made a sharp save from Takehiro Tomiyasu, but Tunisia’s resistance quickly faded again.
Ueda collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and guided a precise shot into the bottom-left corner for Japan’s second. In the 69th minute, Ueda flicked on a pass, sending Junya Ito clear to beat Dahmen. Late on, Kaishu Sano crossed from the right and Ueda glanced in a looping header to complete the scoring.

Tunisia managed only two attempts worth a combined 0.05 expected goals, underlining a blunt attack. Against that, Japan had freedom to dominate and are now the first Asian team to score four goals in a World Cup match. Tunisia’s defence, once strong in qualifying, has now conceded 14 goals across the last three competitive fixtures.
Kamada became just the second Japanese player to score in consecutive World Cup games, after Junichi Inamoto in 2002. Ueda is only the third Japan player to register a goal and assist in a single World Cup match, joining Takashi Inui against Senegal in 2018 and Keisuke Honda against Denmark in 2010. Ueda’s brace and assist also put the forward level with Cody Gakpo as the only players so far at this tournament to produce at least two goals and one assist in a single game.
Tunisia’s 4-0 defeat followed another loss by a four-goal margin, placing the team in unwanted company with Greece in 1994, South Korea in 1954 and Bolivia in 1930, as the fourth nation to lose consecutive World Cup matches by at least four goals. Tunisia have now beaten Japan only once in seven attempts and never looked likely to threaten Hajime Moriyasu’s side here.
The overall numbers highlight the gap between the teams, with Japan clinical in attack and secure in defence, while Tunisia struggled badly at both ends of the pitch.
