Mumbai Indians have elevated former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to the position of Head Coach, marking a new chapter in one of the most enduring associations between a player and a franchise in T20 cricket.
Pollard, who joined Mumbai Indians as a 22-year-old, has been associated with the franchise for 16 years, contributing to its success first as a player and later as a member of the coaching staff. Having most recently served as the team's batting coach, he will now take on the responsibility of leading the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions into their next chapter.
The appointment underlines Mumbai Indians' faith in a figure who has experienced the franchise's winning culture from within and understands the expectations
that come with representing the Blue and Gold.
Mumbai Indians co-owner Mrs Nita M. Ambani expressed her delight at Pollard's elevation, highlighting his long-standing contribution to the franchise and his understanding of what it means to represent the team.
"Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach," Ambani said.
She also emphasised Pollard's connection with the team's supporters, popularly known as the Paltan, and expressed confidence in his ability to carry forward the franchise's legacy.
"Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter," she added.
Pollard's appointment represents a significant milestone in a journey that has spanned multiple roles within the Mumbai Indians setup.
As a player, the powerful West Indian all-rounder became an integral part of the franchise's identity, contributing with both bat and ball during its successful years. His experience in high-pressure T20 cricket and his familiarity with the demands of franchise cricket have made him a valuable figure within the MI setup.
Having transitioned into coaching after his playing career with Mumbai Indians, Pollard continued to share his knowledge and expertise as the team's batting coach. His elevation to Head Coach now gives him a broader leadership role in shaping the team's preparations, tactical approach and development of players.
His extensive experience across T20 leagues also provides him with an understanding of the format's evolving demands, where tactical flexibility, adaptability and decision-making under pressure are increasingly important.
With Mumbai Indians looking to build on their established legacy, Pollard's familiarity with the franchise's culture and expectations will be central to his new assignment.
Pollard described his appointment as an honour, acknowledging the importance of Mumbai Indians in his professional journey and expressing gratitude to the franchise's leadership for placing their trust in him.
"It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me," Pollard said.
Reflecting on his experience as both a player and a coach, he highlighted the responsibility that comes with representing the franchise.
"Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold. I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me," he added.
Pollard also outlined his priorities for the new role, with an emphasis on working closely with the squad and support staff while helping the franchise's players reach their potential.
"I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team's legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate," he said.
Pollard's appointment reflects Mumbai Indians' continued focus on maintaining their established team culture while developing talent and pursuing success across competitions.
Owned by Reliance Industries Limited through its subsidiary Indiawin Sports Private Limited, Mumbai Indians are among the most successful franchises in T20 cricket. The men's team has won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 championships, establishing a strong record in franchise cricket.
The wider MI family has also expanded its presence across international T20 leagues and women's cricket, with teams competing in multiple countries and competitions.
For Pollard, the new role represents an opportunity to draw on his experience of the franchise's most successful years while helping shape its future direction.
After 16 years of wearing the Mumbai Indians colours in different capacities, the former all-rounder now begins a fresh chapter as Head Coach, with the responsibility of guiding the franchise and giving its passionate supporters more moments to celebrate.
