Harry Kane stepped off the bench to hit an 84th-minute winner as Bayern Munich beat PSV 2-1, ending the Eredivisie leaders’ Champions League campaign and confirming Vincent Kompany’s side in second place
in the league stage after a tense matchday eight encounter in Eindhoven.
The result was harsh on PSV, who needed only a draw to reach the knockout-stage play-offs. Bayern arrived already sure of a last-16 spot, yet PSV carried the greater early urgency, reflecting the high stakes for a team chasing continental progress alongside domestic leadership.
Analytics favoured Bayern over the 90 minutes, with an expected goals figure of 1.82 to PSV’s 0.69. Kompany’s side, however, allowed six shots on target before half-time, matching a club Champions League record first set against Ajax in December 2004, underlining PSV’s early pressure.
Jamal Musiala’s story was central to Bayern’s night. The midfielder made a first start in 207 days after suffering a broken leg at the Club World Cup last July. Musiala marked the comeback with another Champions League goal, giving Bayern a further boost in a competition where form often swings quickly.
Musiala has now scored two goals across the last three Champions League matches. That equals the total from the previous 18 appearances in the tournament. The goal came from a smart pass by Lennart Karl, whose growing influence continues to stand out within Bayern’s young attacking group.
Karl slipped a measured ball around the corner on the right side of the box for Musiala’s strike. The 17-year-old now owns four Champions League goal involvements, with three goals and one assist. Only Lamine Yamal, with 10 involvements before turning 18, sits ahead of Karl on that age-based list.
Before Bayern gained control, PSV looked sharper. Tom Bischof almost struck early with a free-kick that skimmed the crossbar. Later in the first half, Ivan Perisic met a cross with a glancing header, but Jonas Urbig reacted superbly to keep the effort out and preserve parity for the visitors.
The pattern changed after the interval. Bayern raised the tempo and began to dictate possession. Just before the hour, Musiala collected Karl’s pass inside the area and fired high into the net. That finish gave Bayern a 1-0 lead and shifted the pressure heavily onto the hosts.
PSV refused to fold and produced a fine equaliser 12 minutes from time. Ismael Saibari exchanged passes with Guus Til on the edge of the area, then curled a precise right-footed shot into the top-left corner. At 1-1, PSV were again on course for the play-offs they required.
However, late drama settled the contest and the group picture. Luis Diaz drove down the flank and delivered a low centre across the box. Kane arrived unmarked and applied a calm first-time finish in the 84th minute, sliding the ball past the goalkeeper to restore Bayern’s advantage.

PSV’s frustration deepened in stoppage time when Junior Mauro received a second yellow card and was sent off. Bayern then saw out the closing moments with an extra player, protecting the one-goal lead that secured victory, confirmed their league-stage position, and pushed PSV out of the Champions League.
