IND vs NZ: Rohit Sharma added another remarkable milestone to his illustrious career on Sunday (January 11), smashing his 650th six in international cricket during the first ODI against New Zealand at Vadodara.
The landmark moment came during India's run chase of a competitive 301, with Rohit opening the innings alongside Shubman Gill. Known for his effortless power and impeccable timing, the former India captain reached the milestone in trademark fashion, clearing the ropes with ease as men's cricket returned to the venue after a gap of 16 years and the crowd erupted in celebration.
Rohit's knock of 26 off 29 balls was brief but impactful, setting the tone at the top of the order. His innings was laced with three boundaries and two towering sixes,
one of which took him past the historic 650-six mark across formats - Tests, ODIs and T20Is combined. The achievement further cements Rohit's status as one of the most destructive and consistent power-hitters the game has ever seen.
Over the years, Rohit has built a reputation for making batting look effortless, particularly in limited-overs cricket. His ability to dominate bowlers without excessive risk has been a hallmark of his success, whether it is piling up double hundreds in ODIs or dismantling attacks in T20Is. Reaching 650 international sixes is a reflection not just of longevity, but also of sustained excellence at the highest level.
New Zealand bowlers, however, managed to rein him in before striking at a crucial moment. The breakthrough came in the 8.4th over, when Kyle Jamieson was rewarded for a disciplined spell. Jamieson kept Rohit quiet through the over and then followed him with a very full delivery as the right-hander backed away. Attempting to go inside-out over cover, Rohit found himself cramped for room, mistimed the shot and chipped it low off the bat. Michael Bracewell, running to his left at mid-off, kept his eyes on the ball and completed a comfortable catch.
The opening partnership with Gill once again underlined India's depth and stability at the top. While Rohit provided early momentum, his intent allowed Gill to settle into his rhythm as India captain notched up a fine half-century along with Virat Kohli. The duo - with their century-plus stand - looked to pace their chase smartly against a New Zealand bowling attack.
With more matches still to come in the series, Rohit Sharma's six-hitting count is only set to rise - and with it, his legacy as one of international cricket's greatest entertainers.
