In the world of cricket, when things go wrong, you find stunning ways to lose matches. For Kolkata Knight Riders, the downward spiral shows no respite as they continue their winless run in this IPL 2026 season.
On Thursday, when it looked like KKR may finally end their freefall and get a win, in came Mukul Choudhary. The youngster from Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu played a blinder of 54 runs as Knight Riders succumbed to another defeat at the Eden Gardens.
Kolkata, with seven wickets to their name and the opponent needing 54 to win in last four overs, gave the game away. Yes, Mukul Choudhary played a stellar knock, but the bowling was toothless, which made it easy for the youngster.
KKR makes an Awful Mess
What makes this result sting for KKR is how utterly they botched the defense.
They started strongly with the ball-Vaibhav Arora struck twice early to remove Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram-but then the execution fell apart in spectacular, embarrassing fashion.
Bowlers who should have been clinical wilted under pressure. Death-over specialists leaked runs at will, and decision-making was hesitant at best. When 7 were needed off the final couple of balls, Choudhary carved a wide yorker for a boundary that summed up KKR's impotence. They had the total, the home crowd, and momentum on their side, yet they surrendered it like a team that didn't believe they deserved the win.
Let's call it what it is: KKR were timid, poor, and downright awful in execution. This wasn't bad luck or a "close one"-it was a pathetic capitulation from a side sitting pretty in the "warmth of a win" only to freeze when it mattered. Their bowling lacked bite when the asking rate climbed. Their fielding lacked urgency. Their captaincy and plans looked reactive and clueless.
KKR and their Middle Overs Woes
Not just bowling, KKR have been awful with their bat as well. The middle overs haven't found any fluidity as they have been stuck in the middle despite decent starts. On Thursday, their returns from the 11th to 15th over were just 17 runs, at a run rate of 3.40 in those five overs. In hindsight, that display in that juncture has also played a significant part in their defeat. In total, they played out 43 dot balls, more than 30 per cent of their total quota of deliveries.
A Timid Side in the World of Mavericks
After another loss (their worst start in recent memory), questions must be asked about the entire setup, from the overpriced overseas stars who underperformed to the domestic core that failed to close out games. They've now turned a promising position into yet another defeat, looking every bit like a team in disarray rather than title contenders.
In each and every team, the quality of players seems far superior to that of the Knights. Yes, they have suffered from injuries, bans, but the brand of cricket the three-time IPL champions have played so far can have no excuse. Against Mumbai, they surrendered a 220 run score, against Sunrisers they failed to chase 220+. Punjab Kings were heading in the wrong direction when rain came, and now this defeat against LSG has further exposed their fragile endoskeleton.
The lack of proactiveness was vivid in the 20th over against Lucknow, when KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane let Avesh Khan take an easy single with all his players out on the boundary on the leg side. Such snippets of questionable captaincy and decision-making have hurt them throughout so far this season.
They let a winnable game slide through sheer timidity and poor execution. Ajinkya Rahane continued his essay of excuses at the post-match presentation, but the KKR captain must take a look in the mirror. His captaincy has been questionable, and to be very honest, his players have continued to let him down in crunch situations.
Rovman Powell, at the post-match press conference, admitted the lack of application from their bowlers, who didn't even think of bowling wider to Mukul Choudhary. They kept hitting length and kept travelling the distance.
If they continue like this, hesitant in the clutch, sloppy under pressure - they'll be watching the playoffs from home again. No mincing words: this loss was on them, and it was as embarrassing as it gets. In the world of fearlessness, KKR have been timid, and they are paying the lofty prices.
