Katie McCabe is set to swap north London for west London, joining Chelsea on a free transfer when the contract with Arsenal expires next month, after 11 trophy-filled years with the Gunners in the Women’s Super League.
Arsenal had already confirmed before the end of the recent Women’s Super League season that McCabe would depart as a free agent. The Republic of Ireland captain leaves after becoming one of Arsenal’s most experienced players and a central figure in the club’s modern era.
From the 2026-27 campaign, McCabe will play for Chelsea, having signed a three-year agreement that includes an option for an extra 12 months. The move keeps McCabe in the capital while shifting to a direct league rival with major ambitions.
McCabe joined Arsenal
from Shelbourne in 2015 and collected a significant list of honours. The full-back won one WSL title, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the Champions League and the FIFA Champions Cup, contributing at both ends of the pitch across multiple competitions.
Across 11 seasons in north London, McCabe made 178 Women’s Super League appearances. That total includes 21 league games in the 2025-26 season, when Arsenal finished runners-up to champions Manchester City, underlining McCabe’s regular role in high-pressure contests.
At Chelsea, McCabe could act as a potential successor to current left-back Niamh Charles, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City. There also remains uncertainty over whether Lucy Bronze will agree a new contract with Chelsea for future seasons.
McCabe described the move as a chance to connect with Chelsea supporters and compete for major honours in every competition, adding further experience to a squad that regularly challenges for domestic and European trophies.Have you? https://t.co/TO8sS86eb5Chelsea FC Women (@ChelseaFCW) June 1, 2026
McCabe told Chelsea's website: "I'm really excited to get going and show the Chelsea fans how ready I am to perform for the badge. I'm so looking forward to walking out at Stamford Bridge as a home player, being around the fanbase and competing for trophies on all fronts. This club has been successful for so many years. I want to keep pushing and driving that, and for me, it's about bringing that success back to Chelsea. "
Chelsea’s move for McCabe comes after their six-year spell of Women’s Super League dominance ended in 2025-26, when they finished third. The club ended that season six points behind title winners Manchester City, highlighting the increased competition at the top.
