The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has provided a positive fitness update on Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, easing concerns around the star javelin thrower's physical condition ahead of the upcoming competitive season.
Speaking to the media in New Delhi, AFI spokesperson Adil Sumariwala said Neeraj is fit and progressing according to plan, dismissing speculation about any serious injury concerns. He clarified that the reigning Olympic champion is being carefully managed to ensure he remains in peak condition for major competitions.
"Neeraj is absolutely fine. There is no major injury concern," Sumariwala said. "He is following his training programme and everything is going as planned. "
Sumariwala explained that minor niggles and
controlled training loads are a normal part of an elite athlete's career, particularly for someone who competes at the highest level year after year. He stressed that Neeraj and his support team are well aware of how to manage his body through a long and demanding season.
"At this level, athletes will always have some issues from time to time. What is important is how they are managed, and Neeraj's team is doing that very professionally," he said.
The AFI spokesperson also highlighted that there is no urgency to rush Neeraj back into competition, underlining the importance of long-term planning. "There is no need to panic or hurry. The focus is on keeping him healthy and ready for the major events," Sumariwala said, adding that careful planning has been central to Neeraj's sustained success.
Neeraj, who has consistently delivered medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, remains India's biggest medal hope in athletics. AFI officials believe that managing his workload intelligently will allow him to continue competing at the highest level without unnecessary risk.
Sumariwala reiterated that AFI remains in constant touch with Neeraj's support staff and is confident about his preparation. "We are fully satisfied with the way his training and fitness are being handled. There is no cause for concern," he said.
The federation expects Neeraj Chopra to return to competition only when he is fully ready, with the larger goal of maintaining peak performance at the most important events.
