Max Verstappen's Formula 1 future has become one of the biggest talking points in the paddock after a wave of reports claimed the reigning world champion is edging closer to leaving Red Bull. McLaren have emerged as the favourites to sign the Dutchman, but the team insists there is nothing to the speculation.
With conflicting reports, contract clauses and public denials all in play, here's what we actually know.
Why is Verstappen's future suddenly under the spotlight?
Verstappen remains contracted to Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, but several respected outlets have reported that his deal includes a performance-related exit clause.
The clause is widely believed to allow him to leave if he is outside the top two in the Drivers' Championship by Formula 1's summer break. Following his retirement
at Silverstone, Verstappen is now seventh in the standings and can no longer mathematically climb into the top two before the Hungarian Grand Prix, meaning the reported clause is expected to become active later this month.
That development has reignited speculation over his future just as Red Bull continue to struggle for consistency.
Why is McLaren being linked?
Mercedes had long been considered Verstappen's most likely destination, but recent reports suggest the Brackley outfit are set to continue with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, leaving McLaren as the strongest alternative.
According to multiple reports, discussions have taken place between Verstappen's representatives and McLaren, with some even claiming a three-year contract is close to being agreed. The reports also suggest Oscar Piastri's seat-not Lando Norris'-would be the one affected if Verstappen arrives.
Another factor adding fuel to the speculation is the future arrival of Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen's long-time race engineer, who is already set to join McLaren after leaving Red Bull.
Zak Brown has shut the rumours down
Despite the growing speculation, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has repeatedly denied that the team is pursuing Verstappen.
Speaking during the British Grand Prix weekend, Brown insisted there had been "no conversations" with the Dutchman and stressed that McLaren remain fully committed to Norris and Piastri.
He added that there was "nothing to report" and reiterated that he was happy with his current driver line-up.
Max Verstappen hasn't exactly dismissed it
Verstappen, meanwhile, has chosen not to fuel or kill the rumours.
When asked directly about a possible McLaren move, the four-time world champion refused to comment on speculation, saying that if anything changes, people would hear it from him first.
He maintained that his current focus remains on Red Bull and improving the car, but notably stopped short of denying that discussions may have taken place behind the scenes.
Why would Max Verstappen consider leaving Red Bull?
While Red Bull remain one of Formula 1's biggest teams, their 2026 campaign has exposed several concerns.
The RB22 has suffered reliability issues, including back-to-back rear-wing failures that left Verstappen visibly frustrated. At the same time, several senior figures have departed or are preparing to leave, including his trusted race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase.
Reports have also claimed Verstappen rejected Red Bull's attempt to remove the reported exit clause from his contract, although neither side has publicly confirmed those claims.
Together, those developments have only strengthened speculation that the Dutchman is evaluating his long-term future.
What happens to Oscar Piastri?
Much of the speculation centres around Oscar Piastri, who is reportedly the driver most at risk if Verstappen joins McLaren.
The Australian has slipped to sixth in the championship, but publicly insists he has no concerns. Piastri recently said McLaren have repeatedly assured him they are happy with his performances and that he trusts the team.
However, Formula 1 has shown before that contracts do not always guarantee a seat. McLaren famously bought out Daniel Ricciardo's contract a year early to make way for Piastri in 2022.
So, how much of this is actually confirmed?
As things stand, Verstappen remains a Red Bull driver and McLaren continue to publicly deny any negotiations.
The reported exit clause has never been officially confirmed, while claims of contract talks and an imminent agreement are based entirely on media reports and paddock sources rather than statements from either team.
For now, there is no official indication that Verstappen will leave Red Bull or join McLaren. But with the reported exit clause expected to become active after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the speculation is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
