The Iran national football team suffered one of the cruellest exits of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after crashing out despite going through the group stage without losing a single match.
Team Melli finished with three draws against New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team and Egypt national football team. However, three points were not enough to secure one of the eight best third-placed spots, with goal difference ultimately proving decisive.
To make matters worse, Iran twice appeared to have booked their place in the knockout stage before seeing qualification slip away in heartbreaking fashion.
Why did Iran get eliminated?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup features 48 teams split into 12 groups.
The top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the Round
of 32, while the eight best third-placed teams also advance.
Iran finished third in Group G with:
- Draw vs New Zealand
- Draw vs Belgium
- Draw vs Egypt
- 3 points
- Inferior goal difference to the final qualifying third-placed teams
As a result, Iran narrowly missed out on qualification despite remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage.
Iran's dramatic exit explained
Iran came within moments of reaching the knockout rounds on two separate occasions.
1. A stoppage-time winner against Egypt was ruled out
Knowing victory would guarantee qualification, Iran fought back to draw 1-1 against Egypt after Ramin Rezaeian cancelled out Egypt's opener.
Deep into stoppage time, Shoja Khalilzadeh bundled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations that appeared to have sent Iran through.
However, VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside, leaving Team Melli with just one point instead of three.
2. Austria's 96th-minute equaliser ended Iran's hopes
Iran's fate then rested on the final Group J fixture between Austria national football team and Algeria national football team.
With the score locked at 2-2, Iran were heading out because a draw would send both teams through.
Then came another twist.
Riyad Mahrez scored in the 93rd minute to give Algeria a 3-2 lead, a result that would have eliminated Austria and sent Iran into the knockout stage.
But with virtually the final attack of the match, Saša Kalajdžić headed home in the 96th minute to make it 3-3.
The draw allowed both Austria and Algeria to qualify, leaving Iran outside the top eight third-placed teams on goal difference.
Travel restrictions added to Iran's difficulties
Iran's campaign was also overshadowed by logistical challenges away from the pitch.
Because of ongoing geopolitical tensions, the squad was based in Mexico instead of the United States and had to travel across the border for matches. For their first two group games, they were only permitted to enter the US shortly before kickoff and had to leave immediately afterwards, significantly reducing preparation time.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei described Iran as the tournament's "most oppressed" team, while captain Mehdi Taremi called the travel arrangements a "disaster. "
Are Iran the unluckiest team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
Few World Cup exits have been as painful.
Iran remained unbeaten, had a stoppage-time winner ruled out by VAR, briefly looked set to qualify when Algeria took a late lead over Austria, and were then eliminated by a 96th-minute equaliser in another match.
Those two moments-separated by less than 24 hours-ended Team Melli's dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.
