Nigeria's hopes of reaching the World Cup were dashed as they lost to DR Congo in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Victor Osimhen, Nigeria's key player and top scorer in the Champions League, was forced off at half-time due to injury. His absence was felt as Nigeria struggled without him, ultimately losing 4-3 on penalties.
Osimhen's injury is a significant blow for Nigeria. He had been instrumental in their campaign, aiming to lead them into the inter-confederation play-offs. Despite his efforts from the sidelines during extra time, Nigeria couldn't secure victory. His fitness remains a concern with upcoming matches for Galatasaray and Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
DR Congo capitalised on Osimhen's absence, levelling the score
through Mechak Elia after an early Nigerian goal by Frank Onyeka. The match saw DR Congo have two goals disallowed in extra time before heading into penalties. Timothy Fayulu, substituted in as goalkeeper for DR Congo, played a crucial role by saving two penalties.
The penalty shootout was tense, with both teams missing opportunities. Calvin Bassey missed for Nigeria, while Fayulu saved Moses Simon's attempt. Semi Ajayi also failed to convert his penalty, allowing Chancel Mbemba to score the decisive goal for DR Congo. This result means Nigeria will miss out on next year's tournament in North America.
Nigeria has participated in six World Cups, second only to Cameroon among African nations. However, they will be overtaken by Tunisia and Morocco next year. Their next chance to qualify will be for the 2030 World Cup, marking a 12-year gap since their last appearance.

For DR Congo, this victory brings them closer to qualifying for their second World Cup since 1974. They hope to make history again by securing their place in the prestigious tournament after more than four decades.
As Nigeria reflects on this setback, attention turns to Osimhen's recovery and future competitions. The team must regroup and prepare for upcoming challenges while hoping for better fortunes in future qualification campaigns.
