New Delhi, Sep 17: In a major ownership shakeup at Stamford Bridge, Todd Boehly and fellow co-owner Mark Walter have sold their stakes in Chelsea. This leaves Clearlake Capital with full control of Chelsea FC.
"Chelsea Football Club today announced that affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group will acquire the ownership interest of Todd Boehly," the club said in a public statement yesterday.
Furthermore, the club revealed that as part of the transition, Clearlake will also acquire Mark Walter's ownership interest and therefore acquire full control of the club.
Clearlake and Boehly were part of the group that completed the takeover of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022 after the Russian billionaire was sanctioned by the UK government following Russia's
invasion of Ukraine. At the time, Boehly, Mark Walter and Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss collectively held a 12.8% stake, while Clearlake owned 61.5% of the club.
Boehly has now moved away from the chairman's role but is set to remain involved with the ownership group. Reflecting on his tenure, he described it as an honour to serve as Chelsea chairman and thanked the Premier League, players, coaches, staff and supporters for their contributions to the club.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano also acknowledged Boehly's contribution, calling him an important partner during their time at Chelsea. They said Clearlake's priorities under full ownership would include continued investment in the club's infrastructure, sporting operations and player development.
Hansjörg Wyss will also remain an important stakeholder in the ownership group. Chelsea confirmed that the ownership transition will not lead to changes in the club's day-to-day operations, leadership or overall strategy.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League and will return to action on Friday when they face London rivals Brentford.
