Filipino fighter Carlo Bumina-ang talks about his upcoming fight and details his opponent's strengths and weaknesses before they clash in a crucial bantamweight MMA showdown at ONE Fight Night 39 on 24
January from Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium.
The 31-year-old faces unbeaten Brazilian Marcos Aurelio in what represents a must-win situation. Bumina-ang brings a 7-2 ONE record with six victories via finishes, including four knockouts and two submissions.
Now the Filipino striker is up against an undefeated challenge in 21-year-old Aurelio. The Brazilian brings an 8-0 professional MMA record, standing 5'8" with proven finishing ability. Aurelio is a Muay Thai champion and well-rounded fighter who has secured victories via both TKO and submission.
Bumina-ang acknowledges the pressure of consecutive losses and his precarious position. The 31-year-old Filipino enters with a kill-or-be-killed mentality, understanding another defeat could jeopardize his future goals.
"I feel like my back is against the wall since I now have two losses in ONE. My mentality right now is simply kill or get killed," Bumina-ang said.
"He'll probably be fired up because he's making his debut, and he wants to keep his undefeated record. But I respect him. He's a well-rounded opponent, and I'm excited to face him. "
The Filipino has studied Aurelio's game extensively and identified his opponent's primary strengths. While acknowledging the Brazilian's ground game competence, Bumina-ang believes Aurelio's Muay Thai background makes him primarily a striker who excels at counterpunching and pressure fighting.
However, the Team Lakay representative refuses to underestimate Aurelio's grappling despite his striking pedigree. Bumina-ang expects the Brazilian to target submissions given his two previous losses came via grappling exchanges rather than striking.
"His ground game is good, but he's more of a Muay Thai specialist. He's a good counterstriker and pressure fighter as well. It plays to my style, actually, because I prefer aggressive opponents," Bumina-ang said.
"He's a striker, but I won't underestimate him on the ground. I need to be wary because I believe he'll try to test my grappling. My two losses were by submission, so he'll probably think he can take me there. But I'll prove him wrong if he tries. "
