The Indian Women's Hockey Team scripted a memorable triumph on Sunday, defeating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final to win the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup 2025-26 in Auckland.
Goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo in the opening quarter laid the foundation for India's victory as they produced a disciplined defensive performance to lift the title and earn promotion to the FIH Hockey Women's Pro League for next season.
It was India's second Nations Cup title, having also won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2022. The victory capped off an outstanding campaign in which India remained unbeaten throughout the competition.
Dream Start for India
India could not have asked for a better beginning in the final. Despite New Zealand enjoying more possession in the opening
exchanges, it was India who struck first.
Navneet Kaur won a penalty corner and converted it emphatically in the fourth minute to give the visitors an early lead. The goal boosted India's confidence as they continued to trouble the hosts with their pace and intensity on the counterattack.
India doubled their advantage in the 15th minute through Sunelita Toppo. Deepika's sharp effort from a penalty corner was expertly deflected by Toppo into the net, leaving New Zealand with a mountain to climb.

Holding a two-goal lead, India showcased tremendous defensive organisation for the remainder of the contest.
The hosts pushed hard to find a way back into the match, but India's backline remained compact and disciplined. Their disciplined display ensured New Zealand never found a breakthrough as India comfortably saw out the game to secure a famous 2-0 victory.
Unbeaten Run to Glory
India's title-winning campaign was built on consistency and resilience. They opened their tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the United States before defeating Japan 2-1 and Uruguay 3-2 in Pool A. The Women in Blue then stormed into the final with a dominant 6-0 win over Chile in the semi-finals.
The victory over New Zealand completed a perfect unbeaten run and underlined the team's growing stature on the international stage.
Individual Honours and Rewards
Lalremsiami was named Player of the Match in the final for her influential display, while Deepika emerged as the tournament's joint-highest scorer with six goals, sharing the honour with USA forward Ashley Sessa.
Following the triumph, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff in recognition of their achievement.
A Return to the Pro League
Beyond lifting the trophy, the victory carries added significance as it secures India's return to the prestigious FIH Hockey Women's Pro League.
