Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes suffered again as Brighton held Pep Guardiola’s team to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, a third consecutive league stalemate that may leave City eight points behind Arsenal if Mikel Arteta’s side defeat Liverpool on Thursday.
The result extended a difficult week in which City dropped six points from winning positions in seven days, and nine in the Premier League this season, with Brighton alone responsible for over half of those squandered points after also overturning a deficit to win 2-1 in August.
Guardiola’s team started nervously despite debuting 20-year-old centre-back Max Alleyne during a defensive injury crisis, and Brighton created the clearer early chances, with Pascal Gross and Ferdi Kadioglu
both failing to punish uncertain defending inside the opening stages.
City finally gained control before half-time when a VAR review awarded a penalty in the 41st minute, Diego Gomez adjudged to have brought down Jeremy Doku, and Erling Haaland converted from the spot to give the hosts a narrow Premier League advantage.
Early in the second half City almost doubled the lead, as Bernardo Silva struck the post after Yasin Ayari lost possession cheaply just 34 seconds after the restart, but Brighton stayed in the contest and threatened repeatedly on the counter-attack.
The visitors equalised on 60 minutes when Ayari launched a swift break and slipped a clever pass to Kaoru Mitoma, who drove a low finish into the far corner from the edge of the penalty area, silencing the home crowd and shifting momentum in this Premier League meeting.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side could have gone ahead ten minutes later when Mitoma delivered a perfect low cross from the left, only for Gomez to completely miscue what appeared a simple tap-in, allowing City to escape despite being carved open again by Brighton’s transition play.
City responded by pressing Brighton deep in the closing stages, generating a series of chances as Haaland shot straight at Bart Verbruggen from close range and Rayan Cherki fired narrowly wide of the right post, yet the hosts failed to find a decisive goal and sections of the Etihad Stadium booed the team at full-time.
Premier League statistics highlight Haaland and Milner milestones
Haaland’s first-half strike carried major statistical weight, as it was confirmed as the 35,000th goal in Premier League history, arriving four years and 131 days after Chris Wood scored the competition’s 30,000th goal for Burnley against Leeds United in August 2021.
The penalty was also Haaland’s 150th goal for Manchester City in all competitions, achieved in only 173 club appearances, meaning Haaland reached the 150-goal mark 28 games faster than any other player for a Premier League side since 1992-93, with Alan Shearer needing 201 matches.
| Statistic | Manchester City | Brighton |
|---|---|---|
| Goals | 1 | 1 |
| Shots | 22 | 6 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 2.35 | 0.81 |
Despite those attacking numbers, with 22 attempts and an expected goals value of 2.35 against Brighton’s six shots and 0.81 xG, City again failed to turn dominance into victory, mirroring previous meetings as this is the second straight season they have dropped five points from winning positions against the Seagulls.
Brighton introduced former City midfielder James Milner seven minutes from the end, and Milner became only the fifth outfield player to feature in a Premier League match at the age of 40 or older, joining Gordon Strachan, Teddy Sheringham, Kevin Phillips and Ryan Giggs on that particular list.
The draw also maintained Hurzeler’s strong personal record against Guardiola, underlined by one striking statistic.
4 - Brighton's Fabian Hrzeler remains unbeaten against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side in the Premier League (W2 D2) - becoming the first ever manager to avoid defeat in each of his first four top-flight meetings with the Spaniard. Attention now turns to Arsenal’s home game against Liverpool, which could leave Manchester City eight points off the Premier League summit, while Guardiola’s next league assignment comes against Manchester United on January 17, with recent dropped leads and Brighton’s resilience raising further concerns over the title defence.
