Atletico Madrid reached the Champions League semi-finals after a tense night, progressing 3-2 on aggregate despite losing 2-1 to Barcelona. The visitors finished with 10 players at the Metropolitano, where Ademola Lookman’s first-half strike proved decisive, while Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal scored for Barcelona in an intense and often chaotic second leg.
Barcelona arrived needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg and almost dragged the tie into extra time. Ronald Araujo headed over from close range late on, and Eric Garcia’s dismissal after a VAR review left Barcelona exposed during the closing stages of a physically demanding contest.
Lamine Yamal set the tone instantly, testing Juan Musso inside two minutes before striking soon
after. The winger sprinted onto Ferran Torres’ clever pass and slipped a low finish under Musso to give Barcelona early hope. Ferran then smashed in a fierce effort on 24 minutes, levelling the aggregate score with a powerful strike after Atletico failed to clear.
Fermin Lopez almost completed the turnaround before the half-hour mark, ghosting into the area to meet a cross from the right. Musso raced out and blocked bravely, with Lopez accidentally catching the goalkeeper in the face while stretching for the ball. Atletico responded quickly, punishing Barcelona’s missed chance with a clinical attacking move down their right flank.
Marcos Llorente surged forward in the 31st minute and picked out Ademola Lookman with a precise low cross. Lookman met the pass first time and drove the ball firmly past Marc-Andre ter Stegen, restoring Atletico’s overall advantage and shifting the momentum again in a first half packed with swings in control.
After the interval, Barcelona thought they had wiped out Atletico Madrid’s lead again when Ferran Torres finished clinically. However, the flag went up, with replays confirming Ferran had moved marginally offside before Gavi’s effort deflected into the forward’s path, and the goal was ruled out, denying Barcelona crucial momentum early in the second half.
The task grew harder in the 79th minute. Following a VAR check, Eric Garcia was shown a red card for denying a clear scoring chance after grappling substitute Alexander Sorloth from behind. Reduced to 10 players, Barcelona still pushed forward, but Araujo headed over from six yards in stoppage time, missing a huge opportunity to force extra time.
The night began positively for Lamine Yamal, who marked a landmark outing by scoring in style. This was Yamal’s 150th appearance for Barcelona in all competitions, and the goal, timed at 3:51, was the club’s earliest in a Champions League knockout match since Lionel Messi scored against Chelsea in March 2018, when Messi struck after just 02:06.
Yamal’s finish took the teenager to 20 goal contributions in the Champions League. At 18 years and 275 days, Yamal is now the youngest player to reach that figure in the competition. Despite those numbers, Barcelona’s comeback stalled, and attention turned to Lookman’s composure in attack and Atletico Madrid’s efficiency across both legs.
Lookman’s goal capped another productive display in Atletico colours. The forward has now directly contributed to nine goals in 17 appearances for the club. Since Lookman’s debut in February, only Julian Alvarez, with 11 goal involvements for Diego Simeone’s side, has provided more combined goals and assists in all competitions.
Discipline again hurt Barcelona in Europe, leaving Hansi Flick furious with Garcia’s dismissal. Barca have now received a red card in both legs of a Champions League knockout tie for the first time. Flick is likely to view that trend, and Garcia’s sending-off in particular, as a decisive factor in a contest that Barcelona often controlled statistically.
Atletico Madrid delivered a typically stubborn performance, doing just enough across two legs. Both teams registered 15 shots, but Barcelona produced chances worth 2.28 expected goals compared to Atletico’s 1.71. Despite that attacking edge, Barcelona could not convert their opportunities, and Atletico’s resilience secured a semi-final place at Barcelona’s expense.
