New Delhi, September 20: The Indian men's hockey team begins its Asian Games 2026 campaign against Indonesia on Sunday, with more than just a winning start at stake. The tournament offers a direct qualification route to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, adding significance to every match.
India enters the competition as the highest-ranked team in the Asian Games after a disappointing World Cup campaign, where Craig Fulton's side finished eighth in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The four-time Asian Games champions have been placed in Pool A alongside hosts Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The opening clash against Indonesia presents India with an opportunity to build momentum before facing tougher challenges against Japan and South Korea in the
pool stage.
India will also be determined to reclaim the Asian Games gold medal, having settled for bronze at the 2022 Hangzhou Games. With an Olympic berth on the line, Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates will look to make a strong statement from the very beginning of their campaign.
