Lamine Yamal is putting in extra hours of dedicated training to ensure he arrives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in peak condition, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has revealed.
The Barcelona winger suffered a hamstring injury during the La Liga side's victory over Celta Vigo in April, which ruled him out for the remainder of the domestic season. However, reports have indicated that the 18-year-old is on track to return for Spain's campaign as they look to add the World Cup trophy to their Euro 2024 triumph.
Yamal has enjoyed a stellar breakthrough season, registering 27 goal involvements in La Liga (16 goals and 11 assists). Only Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, with 28 involvements (24 goals, four assists), has contributed more, while Yamal remains
the sole player in La Liga this season with double figures for assists.
Spain open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 in Atlanta, before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, represents a major opportunity for La Roja to secure a second World Cup title, having last lifted the trophy in 2010.
De la Fuente Praises Yamal's Professionalism
"Apart from his great talent, he trains three hours a day, goes to the gym, visits his physio, his nutritionist and his psychologist, and gives himself to his invisible training, which is the most important thing."Invisible training is something that many people are unaware of. It's about spending 24 hours thinking about your work. Nobody gives Lamine anything.
"I talk about Lamine because I know him very well. God willing, he will arrive at the World Cup as well as possible.
- Luis de la Fuente, Spain head coach (via Goal)
At Euro 2024, Yamal etched his name into the history books as the youngest-ever goalscorer at a European Championship or World Cup, surpassing Pele's record from the 1958 tournament. Named Young Player of the Tournament, he also delivered four assists - the most by any player in a single Euros edition - helping Spain claim their fourth European title.
Squad Depth Key for Spain
"We contemplate all the scenarios. If you are winning, if you are losing, if the opponent is left with 10 players. "There are players who can give you 20 minutes and that also has enormous value. Olmo arrived injured. We were about to rule him out, but then he was decisive in the Euros.
- Luis de la Fuente
Yamal's blend of elite talent and professional discipline has positioned him as a central figure in Spain's quest for World Cup glory.
