Manchester United climbed to fifth in the Premier League after a 1-0 Boxing Day win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford, a result that keeps Champions League hopes in sight and highlights growing resilience under Ruben Amorim despite key absences and late pressure.
Ayden Heaven linked the victory to United’s wider aims in Europe, while Patrick Dorgu’s first-half volley decided the match, and a reshaped defence protected the narrow lead to deliver only the second clean sheet of the league campaign.
Dorgu struck the decisive goal in the first half with a powerful volley, and that finish proved enough even though Newcastle recorded 16 attempts and controlled most of the ball, with Manchester United registering just 33.4% possession, their lowest
share in any Premier League match this season.
The result moved Amorim’s side level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, with Manchester United behind only on goal difference, and it was also the first league victory without captain Bruno Fernandes since a 3-2 success against Tottenham in March 2022 during Ralf Rangnick’s tenure.
For the first time since Amorim took charge, Manchester United began a Premier League game using a back-four rather than a back-three, and Heaven explained that the squad adjusted quickly to the new structure despite several players operating in less familiar roles.
"Finally, a clean sheet. We've been waiting for this, and I'm just so happy," he told Sky Sports. "[Patrick Dorgu] helped us get there, so thankful to everyone that helped us. It was a different [system] again. I was playing on the right side, obviously, my weaker foot. The manager, we play loads of formations with him, whatever he does, we know it's going to work, you saw. I'm so proud of the team. I think, as Manchester United, we belong in Europe. We want to get back there next season, so we can even push for the top four, possibly win the league, anything's possible. We want to keep trying. "
Manchester United Premier League performance and defensive record
The clean sheet against Newcastle followed a run in which Manchester United had only once kept opponents scoreless in the league, against Sunderland, and came despite repeated late attacks as Newcastle sought an equaliser at the Stretford End.
Amorim’s overall home record shows clear recent improvement; after taking only four wins in the first 14 Premier League matches at Old Trafford under the Portuguese coach, with two draws and eight defeats, Manchester United have now earned five victories in the last eight home league fixtures, drawing twice and losing once.

Manchester United Premier League win and Amorim’s reaction
Newcastle created several late openings, while Manchester United missed chances to extend the lead, with Benjamin Sesko and Diogo Dalot failing to convert promising situations in front of goal, something Amorim noted when reflecting on a tense finish.
"We need to suffer all together in the stadium," the Red Devils boss told Sky Sports. "In the game, [it was]really difficult for us. I think we did a good first half, and then in the second half, we just defended, tried to do something with [Matheus] Cunha. We had the opportunities in the second half with transitions, but it was a good win. But I had so many games here, saying we played very well and didn't get the three points. Thiswas the opposite. I think we suffered together, and we managed to win the game. "
Amorim expanded on the squad’s mentality and how shared pressure has shaped the group. "I think we spent a lot of time with each other. We had some low moments, and that sometimes can bring good things to the group, but it's good to have that feeling to have the experienced players helping the kids, understanding we are suffering. It doesn't matter if you're outside the pitch; you can play the game, and I think everyone played the game. "
Manchester United Premier League win and injury concerns
Mason Mount started the match but did not reappear after the interval, with Jack Fletcher, son of former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, coming on at half-time in a key moment for a young player looking to establish a role in Amorim’s plans.
Amorim stressed that the change was largely a precaution, given the number of missing players already affecting selection. "He felt something at half-time," Amorim said of Mount. "He wanted to goin the second half, but cannot lose more players, and if you are not 100%, Jack [Fletcher] did a very good job. "
Manchester United’s victory, achieved without Fernandes and under heavy pressure late on, underlined growing belief in Amorim’s flexible systems, with Heaven’s comments reflecting a squad that sees a realistic path back into European competition and possibly the title race if results continue to improve.
