Fazila Ikwaput, Soumya Guguloth put up a blockbuster show as East Bengal women continued their sublime run in the Indian Women's League, registering their third straight victory on Tuesday (December 30).
The year 2025 has been a stellar one for them, and the Kolkata club capped it off with a resounding 9-0 win over SESA FC at the Kalyani Stadium.
East Bengal women started with dominance. Fazila Ikwaput was slipped through early, but her curled effort hit the post and went out. But minutes later, another intricate move saw Soumya Guguloth netting the opener for the Kolkata club in the 6th minute.
East Bengal continued their upper hand with another goal, as Ikwaput made no mistake to slot past her first of the afternoon in the 9th minute of the match.
A ball over the top found the Ugandan striker, who volleyed past the SESA custodian with ease.
SESA players failed to put East Bengal under any sort of pressure, and the IWL champions continued to dominate across the pitch. East Bengal continued their scoring spree as Sulanjana Raul further enhanced their lead in the 17th minute. It became 4-0 soon after, as Fazila headed past the goal with ease. The striker was unmarked in the box and made no mistake to find the back of the net. Fazila completed her hat-trick within the 24th minute of the match, as this time she went past the keeper and slotted the ball in the empty net.
Panthoi Chanu at the East Bengal goal was a mere spectator as the defence dealt with the SESA strikers, shutting the shop without much sweat.
Ambruta Nayak was substituted early by the SESA coach, as she was repeatedly beaten by the East Bengal attackers both by pace and strength. Sheela Singh came on, but it had almost no effect as the Kolkata club continued to pile more misery.
At the flag end of the first half, Resty Nanziri scored a volley expertly as East Bengal headed to the break with an astonishing 6-0 lead.
East Bengal started with dominance in the second half as well, but Guguloth was denied by the post again. But seconds later, Ikwaput set her up beautifully and Soumya made no mistake to get her second of the evening, as East Bengal scored first in the second half in the 55th minute.
The East Bengal coach, Anthony Andrews, made a couple of changes after the break, as Karthika Angamuthu and Sangita Basfore both came on for them. In the 72nd minute, Fazila found the net again, her 4th of the afternoon. SESA goalkeeper Beatrice Nketia made a few decent saves to deny the home side. Guguloth claimed her hat-trick in the 85th minute of the match, as she thumped in a superb strike to make it nine.
Despite the mammoth scoreline of 9-0, East Bengal women could have scored a lot more. Nketia made a few superb saves while the attackers also missed a few chances.
With the victory, the Torch Bearers have moved to 2nd spot in the IWL points table and will take on the league leaders Nita Football Academy on January 2 in the new year. SESA remain bottom of the table with four defeats in a row and will have to buckle up for the remainder of the season.
