Glasgow, July 28: India's fastest man Gurindervir Singh saw his maiden Commonwealth Games campaign come to an early end after failing to progress beyond the opening round of the men's 100m on Monday (July 27).
Competing at the Scotstoun Stadium, the national record holder finished second in Heat 4 with a time of 10.39 seconds, behind Jamaica's Rohan Watson, who crossed the line in 10.13s.
While Gurindervir secured an automatic top-two finish in his heat, his time wasn't enough to earn one of the fastest qualifying spots, with only the 17 quickest athletes advancing to the semi-finals.
For an athlete who had arrived in Glasgow as one of India's brightest medal hopes in athletics, it was a disappointing conclusion to what had otherwise been a breakthrough
season.
A Race That Started Well
The 25-year-old Punjab athlete looked sharp in the early stages of the race, producing one of the quickest starts in his heat. Through the first 30 to 40 metres, Gurindervir ran confidently and stayed in contention with the leading athletes.
However, he couldn't maintain the same pace over the closing metres and finished in 10.39 seconds. That proved costly, with Barbados' Kuron Griffith claiming the final semi-final qualification spot with 10.24 seconds.
While the result ended India's hopes in the marquee sprint event, it also served as a reminder of the fine margins at elite international competitions, where even a fraction of a second can separate qualification from elimination.
Injury Disrupted His Preparations
The disappointing result also came against the backdrop of an interrupted build-up to the Games. When myKhel spoke exclusively to India's sprint coach and Athletics High Performance Director at Reliane Sports Foundation, James Hillier, after the athletics team landed in Glasgow last week, the British coach revealed that Gurindervir had been dealing with a hamstring injury before the Games, forcing him to miss the Inter-State Championships in June and disrupting his preparations.
"He (Gurindervir) had a bit of an injury coming into this, unfortunately. He didn't compete at the Inter-State because of that injury. So the preparation has not been ideal, but it is what it is. We have to still go out there and perform. And really, it's just about that self-belief. I think he's got a lot more self-belief than he's ever had," Hillier had told MyKhel.
Despite the interrupted build-up, Hillier remained optimistic that Gurindervir's improved confidence after breaking the national record twice this season would help him compete well in Glasgow.
Hillier Explains the Result
Following Gurindervir's elimination, Hillier shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the performance, revealing that the sprint camp had deliberately kept the injury out of the spotlight.
"Everyone will look at the timings and go why couldn't he do his best. He's had a hamstring injury for the last month, we've been keeping it quiet. Where he is at now, he can do the first 60 metres very well," Hillier was quoted by media reports after the race.
A Season That Shouldn't Be Forgotten
The first-round exit should not overshadow what has been a landmark year for Gurindervir. The Punjab sprinter, who trains in Mumbai under the watchful eyes of Hillier and his team, became the fastest Indian in history by breaking the men's 100m national record twice this season at Federation Cup 2026 in Ranchi (10.09 seconds), raising expectations that he could challenge the best sprinters in the Commonwealth.
Glasgow also marked his first appearance at a major senior multi-sport championship, where racing against world-class opposition under immense pressure is a vastly different experience from domestic competitions.
For Gurindervir, the Commonwealth Games may have ended in disappointment, but the season has already established him as the face of Indian sprinting.
With valuable experience now under his belt and the Asian Games on the horizon, the national record holder will be hoping that Glasgow becomes a stepping stone rather than a setback in what promises to be a long international career.
