Manpreet Singh, the former captain of Indian men's hockey team, has clarified that he requested a break from the sport to rest and spend time with his family.
The statement comes amid rumours suggesting his exclusion from the core group of 33 probables was due to disciplinary issues. Speculation arose after reports alleged his involvement with recreational drugs during a South Africa tour last December.
Manpreet addressed these rumours on social media, explaining that the decision for a break was mutual. "Since the Paris Olympics, it's been non-stop hockey for me," Manpreet wrote on X. He mentioned continuous tournaments across various continents, which left him needing time to recharge. The 33-year-old midfielder expressed gratitude to Hockey
India and the coach for granting him this break.
Manpreet's Recent Achievements
Manpreet recently co-captained Ranchi Royals to the Hockey India League final, earning praise for his performances. He is also on the brink of matching Dilip Tirkey's record of 412 caps for India. Despite his absence from the upcoming Pro League season, Manpreet remains a significant figure in Indian hockey.
The Pro League season is set to commence next month in Rourkela. Hockey India announced the list of probables on Thursday, excluding not only Manpreet but also forward Dilpreet Singh and goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak. The Indian team will face Argentina in their opening match on February 11.
Family Time and Future Plans
Manpreet highlighted personal reasons for his break, mentioning the birth of his second daughter last year. "With all the camps and tournaments lined up one after another," he explained, "this short break will allow me time with family. " He believes this period will help him return mentally refreshed and stronger for the team.
He expressed his best wishes to the Indian team for their Pro League campaign. "I thank @TheHockeyIndia and Coach for allowing me this short break and I wish the Indian Team best of luck for their Pro League," he added. His focus remains on returning rejuvenated to contribute effectively to future competitions.
