Caitlin Clark returns to the floor with a strong display for the Indiana Fever, yet still admits full trust in fitness is missing after the 90-82 win over the Golden State Valkyries on Friday.
The number one overall pick in 2024 leads all scorers with 22 points, hands out nine assists and hits four of nine attempts from beyond the arc, but manages minutes carefully after recent and past fitness concerns.
Clark explains that last season’s injury issues remain in mind, after being restricted to 13 games due to different problems, and that experience shapes how playing time is handled during the early part of the current WNBA campaign.
Those setbacks help explain why Clark missed Wednesday’s 90-73 victory over the Portland Fire, ending a run of appearances
in the first four Fever games, as the guard and staff chose caution rather than risk in Game 5.
Asked about sitting out against Portland, Clark says: "These are the best players in the world, and if I don't feel 100% confident in my body on Game 5 of the year, I don't know if that's really worth it in that scenario. "
Head coach Stephanie White praises Clark’s performance and physical approach against the Valkyries, stating:I thought she was great [.] From a physicality standpoint, I love the way she's going to the rim and finishing tough plays, and her defense was really good. Clark compares Friday’s workload with recent commitments in national colours, saying: "Yes, I played USA Basketball [in the offseason], but I didn't play 32 minutes, super physical. That's the difference for me right now, but I feel great. I think a lot of times, for me, it's the next day, understanding how my body feels and understanding that a little bit better. Obviously, your adrenaline is pumping, you don't always understand right after the game. Overall, I feel good. It's just about continuing to take care of my body. "
The Fever improve to 4-2 with the victory and sit second in the Eastern Conference, behind the 3-1 Atlanta Dream, while preparing for a quick rematch with the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday in San Francisco as Clark and staff continue to balance competitive demands with careful injury management.
