The BCCI is set to review India's recent performances and wider team management on September 3, with head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman expected to attend the meeting in Mumbai. The review comes after a difficult run in T20Is, but the broader picture under Gambhir is far more complicated than the latest results alone suggest.
The meeting, which was reportedly delayed from July, is expected to cover India's recent 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland and 4-0 loss to England, alongside injury management, player availability, selection and preparations for the upcoming New Zealand tour.
That makes the meeting less about one poor stretch of results and more about assessing the direction of Indian cricket under the Gambhir-Agarkar
combination.
Gautam Gambhir's record is defined by extremes
Gambhir's tenure has produced some of India's strongest white-ball results while simultaneously exposing significant problems in Test cricket.
In 19 Tests under Gambhir, India have won seven, lost 10 and drawn two, giving them a win percentage of 36.84. That record includes the unprecedented 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand and the 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss in Australia.
India also drew their 2025 England Test series 2-2 before beating Sri Lanka 1-0 in a later series.
The Test record, therefore, is the clearest area of concern heading into the BCCI review.
Yet judging Gambhir's tenure solely through that prism would ignore what India have achieved in limited-overs cricket.
India remained unbeaten in the 2025 Champions Trophy and subsequently won the 2026 T20 World Cup. Their T20I record during Gambhir's tenure has been particularly strong for much of his time in charge, making the recent defeats a sharp reversal rather than a fair representation of the entire period.
The ODI numbers offer a different picture
India's ODI record under Gambhir is considerably healthier.
The team have won 12 of 20 ODIs during his tenure, losing seven and recording one no-result. That gives them a 60 per cent win rate.
More importantly, India's most significant ODI tournament during this period ended in silverware. They went through the 2025 Champions Trophy unbeaten, reinforcing their status as one of the strongest limited-overs teams in international cricket.
There have nevertheless been warning signs, particularly in bilateral cricket. India have suffered series defeats against Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand, suggesting that their ODI consistency has not been as complete as their Champions Trophy triumph might indicate.
T20 success makes the recent slump more difficult to assess
T20 cricket is where Gambhir's tenure has arguably been strongest.
India had won the vast majority of their T20Is during the early part of his tenure and went on to win the 2026 T20 World Cup. That success makes the recent defeats to Ireland and England more notable, but also puts them into context.
A poor bilateral run does not erase the fact that India have already delivered a major global title under Gambhir.
The BCCI's challenge, therefore, is determining whether the recent results represent a temporary dip or expose deeper problems with selection, squad management and tactical planning.
Ajit Agarkar's position is unlikely to be the central concern
The meeting also comes at an important point for Agarkar, whose tenure as chief selector is expected to be discussed ahead of the BCCI's annual general meeting later in September.
However, there appears to be little indication that the board is unhappy with the working relationship between Agarkar and Gambhir.
Reports have suggested that the BCCI is satisfied with the communication between the head coach and chief selector. The fact that applications were sought for the junior selection committee but not the senior selection committee has also been viewed as an indication that continuity at the senior level is expected.
That would make the September 3 meeting more of a review of the wider cricketing programme than an immediate threat to Agarkar's position.
What the BCCI will really be looking at
The most significant questions are likely to extend beyond the results column.
India's injury management has become an increasingly important issue, particularly with workload and player availability affecting selection. The board will also want clarity over how the Test side can be rebuilt after a period in which India's dominance at home and abroad has diminished.
There is also the question of how much responsibility should sit with Gambhir, Agarkar and the wider support staff when results fluctuate across formats.
The contrast is stark. India have won major white-ball silverware under Gambhir, yet their Test record has been poor by the standards traditionally expected of the side.
That makes the review less a referendum on Gambhir's tenure and more an opportunity for the BCCI to establish whether the current coaching and selection structure has the right plan for the next phase.
A review, not necessarily a reckoning
The September 3 meeting should not automatically be interpreted as a precursor to major changes.
India's recent T20I results provide a legitimate reason for scrutiny, but the larger record includes a T20 World Cup triumph and an unbeaten Champions Trophy campaign. Agarkar's working relationship with Gambhir is reportedly viewed positively, while there are signs that the senior selection committee is set for continuity.
The more pertinent issue is whether India can reconcile their formidable white-ball success with the problems that have emerged in Test cricket.
For Gambhir and Agarkar, the meeting is therefore likely to be about accountability, planning and course correction rather than simply defending their jobs. The results have created enough questions for the BCCI to demand answers - but not yet enough to make the case that the entire project has failed.
