Rory McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances at the Australian Open following a strong finish in the second round. He managed three birdies in the last four holes, bringing his score to two-under after two rounds. This places him seven shots behind the leaders, Daniel Rodrigues and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, who are both at nine-under at Royal Melbourne.
McIlroy attributes his recovery to shifting weather conditions, which he believes transformed the course dynamics. "Opposite wind, coming out of the south so it definitely played like a different golf course, different clubs off tees," he explained to Sky Sports. The change offered new strategic options and made the course more challenging.
The firming up of the course required careful consideration
of approach shots. Despite not playing his best over recent days, McIlroy was pleased with his late surge. "Certainly not my best stuff out there the last few days but it was nice to finish the way I did," he remarked.
After a bogey on hole 14, McIlroy's prospects seemed dim, but he finished strongly and is eager for the weekend rounds. "It wasn't looking great after the bogey on 14, but overall, a great finish and delighted to be here for the weekend," he said. He remains hopeful about closing the gap with a strong performance in upcoming rounds.

McIlroy is confident that being seven shots behind isn't insurmountable. He plans to capitalise on favourable conditions in his next round. "Seven isn't too far back, I feel if I can go out there tomorrow morning and shoot a good one, I can get myself right back in the tournament," he stated.
The competition sees local favourite Min Woo Lee trailing by just one shot in third place. As McIlroy gears up for another day on the greens, he remains focused on improving his standing and potentially securing another title.
