Sven Botman has committed to Newcastle United until the summer of 2030, with Eddie Howe praising the decision as a major boost ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City on Tuesday. The 26-year-old defender extends a spell that has already passed 90 appearances.
Botman aims to celebrate the new contract with a strong display against Manchester City, as Newcastle United chase a tenth straight win in the EFL Cup. The club’s current nine-match streak in the competition is already the best in their history.
Newcastle United’s nine consecutive EFL Cup victories place the side among select company. Excluding shootouts, only Liverpool, with 11 straight wins between 1994 and 1995, and Arsenal, with 10 between 1987 and 1988, have
put together longer winning runs in the tournament’s history.
Botman featured twice during Newcastle United’s triumphant EFL Cup campaign last season, though a knee injury ruled the defender out of the final against Liverpool. The centre-back now has further opportunities to add to that record after committing long term to St. James Park.
Since joining from Lille before the 2022-23 season, Botman has played 93 matches for Newcastle United in all competitions. Seventeen of those appearances come this season, underlining a regular role in Howe’s defence and continued reliance on Botman in domestic and cup fixtures.
Across 72 Premier League games, Botman has directly contributed to five goals, scoring twice and providing three assists. The defender’s duel success rate stands at 63.5%, while 64.5% of tackles have been won, highlighting consistent effectiveness without the ball over two full league campaigns.
