Jasprit Bumrah marked his return to India's T20I lineup with a landmark performance in the first match against South Africa at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday (December 9), becoming the first Indian-and only the fifth player ever-to register at least 100 wickets in all three formats of international cricket.
The milestone moment arrived when Bumrah dismissed Dewald Brevis early in his spell. The right-arm quick, operating with trademark rhythm and precision, induced a mishit that was safely pouched by Suryakumar Yadav in the deep. That dismissal not only shifted momentum India's way but also etched Bumrah's name into cricket's elite statistical archive.
Prior to this match, the exclusive club included only Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga,
Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shakib Al Hasan-all known for their longevity and consistency across formats. Bumrah has now joined them, further strengthening his reputation as one of modern cricket's premier fast bowlers.
The wicket against Brevis was also Bumrah's 100th in T20Is, making him only the second Indian after Arshdeep Singh to reach the mark in the shortest format. Bumrah later added another scalp-removing Keshav Maharaj for a duck-to finish with a strong impact spell.
Since his international debut in January 2016, Bumrah has built a remarkable record across formats. He now sits on 234 Test wickets, 149 ODI wickets, and 100 T20I wickets, all achieved with an economy rate and strike rate among the world's best. His adaptability-moving seamlessly from red ball reverse swing to white ball yorkers-remains unmatched in Indian cricket history.
India's bowlers delivered collectively as well, with Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy striking twice each, while Hardik Pandya chipped in with a wicket. Earlier, Pandya had also produced a blistering unbeaten 59 from 28 balls to guide India to 175/6.
With milestones, dominance and momentum on his side, Bumrah's latest achievement further cements his status-not just as India's bowling spearhead, but as one of the greatest fast bowlers of his era.
