The Minnesota Timberwolves edged the San Antonio Spurs 104-102 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals, despite a record defensive display from Victor Wembanyama. The result gives Minnesota a 1-0 series lead, while the Spurs are left balancing pride in Wembanyama’s historic numbers with regret over missed offensive chances.
Anthony Edwards provided a major boost for the Timberwolves with 18 points off the bench after an early return from a hyperextended knee. Edwards, who was not expected back for at least another week, hit 8-of-13 shots and also collected three rebounds and three assists in a key support role.
Wembanyama produced a rare triple-double that included 12 blocks, 11 points and 15 rebounds, becoming only the third player, with
Andrew Bynum and Hakeem Olajuwon, to register a postseason triple-double featuring blocks. The 12 blocks set an NBA playoff record and anchored a Spurs defence that kept the score tight throughout.
Yet Wembanyama’s shooting troubles weighed heavily. The French centre made just 29% of field-goal attempts and missed all eight three-point shots. Wembanyama accepted that the offensive struggles, from both personal play and the Spurs’ leaders, limited San Antonio’s ability to turn defensive stops into a winning margin.
| Player | Team | Points | Rebounds | Assists | Blocks | FG |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victor Wembanyama | San Antonio Spurs | 11 | 15 | — | 12 | 29% (0-of-8 3PT) |
| Anthony Edwards | Minnesota Timberwolves | 18 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 8-of-13 |
After the defeat, Wembanyama focused on how personal energy use affected both ends of the floor. "I feel like I had to use my energy," Wembanyama said. "Obviously, I used a lot of it on one side of the court. On the other side, offensively, I used too much energy on things that didn't really help our team. So, that's on me. "
Wembanyama added that his overall rhythm never settled. "There was some good and some bad. It's a lot on me because my game wasn't feeling good. If I had been better, if the offensive leaders on our team would have been better, it would have been different. So, basically, if everything was different, it would have been different. "

Despite the disappointment, Wembanyama stressed that belief inside the Spurs camp remains strong. "We are still very confident," Wembanyama said. "Right now, it's a little bit blurry for me. I think I played the last 16 minutes of the game, maybe, and it just went by like this. That's not good. It means I didn't have the grasp on the game that I wish I did. "
On the Minnesota side, team-mate Julius Randle praised Edwards’ resilience after the knee injury scare. "I'm on record calling him a Wolverine," Randle said of Edwards. "I remember last year, being here at the beginning of the year, and he'd take a nasty fall or a hit, we'd have to call timeout and [I'd think], 'Damn, he might be hurt for real'. Then he just gets up. "
The result leaves the Minnesota Timberwolves ahead in the Western Conference semifinals, while the San Antonio Spurs look to adjust around Victor Wembanyama’s dominant defence and inconsistent attack. Both teams now have clear areas to refine as the series moves forward from Game 1’s narrow two-point margin.
