Ahmedabad, May 21: Gujarat Titans officially confirmed their place in the IPL 2026 top two while simultaneously knocking Chennai Super Kings out of playoff contention after a commanding performance in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (May 21).
The result marked the end of a disappointing and inconsistent campaign for Chennai Super Kings under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, while Gujarat Titans further strengthened their credentials as one of the strongest title contenders heading into the playoffs.
GT's victory ensured they secured a top-two finish in the points table, giving them the crucial advantage of two opportunities to reach the IPL 2026 final through Qualifier 1.
For CSK, however, the defeat officially ended their already fading playoff hopes after a season
filled with batting inconsistency, bowling struggles and tactical uncertainty.
Gill-Sudharsan Set The Tone Again
The match was effectively decided during Gujarat Titans' explosive start with the bat.
After CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Narendra Modi Stadium, GT openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan once again dismantled the opposition attack with another dominant opening stand.
The pair added 125 runs in just 12.2 overs, continuing what has become one of the greatest opening partnerships in IPL history.
Gill smashed a breathtaking 64 off just 27 deliveries before falling to Shivam Dube, while Sudharsan calmly brought up another half-century off 35 balls.
The left-hander's fifty also placed him alongside elite IPL names after becoming only the fourth batter in tournament history to register five consecutive 50-plus scores in a season.
Gujarat Titans Confirm Their Dominance
The victory further underlined Gujarat Titans' consistency throughout IPL 2026.
Gill's side have combined batting stability, tactical clarity and superior Powerplay dominance better than any other team this season.
The opening pair of Gill and Sudharsan has become the foundation of GT's success, repeatedly giving their middle order the freedom to attack without scoreboard pressure.
More importantly, Gujarat Titans have now secured the safety net of a top-two finish - historically one of the biggest advantages in IPL playoff cricket.
Several IPL champions over the years have benefited massively from finishing inside the top two because of the extra opportunity provided through Qualifier 1.
CSK's Campaign Ends in Disappointment
For Chennai Super Kings, the elimination reflects a season where almost nothing consistently clicked together.
Their bowling attack struggled for large portions of the tournament, frequently leaking runs during the Powerplay and death overs. The batting unit too lacked the consistency expected from a traditionally structured CSK lineup.
Gaikwad himself endured an underwhelming season both as captain and batter, while several tactical decisions throughout the campaign attracted criticism.
Injuries, unstable batting roles and a lack of finishing power further complicated CSK's season as they failed to sustain momentum during crucial phases of the tournament.
The defeat against Gujarat Titans therefore felt symbolic of their entire campaign - moments of promise overshadowed by a larger inability to control matches consistently.
GT Enter Playoffs With Serious Momentum
While CSK head toward another major rebuild conversation ahead of IPL 2027, Gujarat Titans now look firmly positioned as genuine title favourites.
Gill's leadership has matured impressively this season, while Sudharsan's consistency has elevated GT's batting lineup into arguably the most dependable unit in the tournament.
With the playoffs approaching, Gujarat Titans appear to be peaking at exactly the right time.
