As Kolkata Knight Riders host Rajasthan Royals in Match 28 of IPL 2026 at Eden Gardens this afternoon, all eyes are on whether Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana will make his much-awaited debut for the franchise.
The 23-year-old joined the KKR camp on Saturday after a long injury layoff, arriving straight from Colombo following clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket.
Pathirana, who was released by Chennai Super Kings and snapped up by KKR for a whopping ₹18 crore at the 2026 mega-auction, had been sidelined since picking up a calf strain during Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
He bowled just four deliveries in the tournament before the injury forced him out.KKR's bowling attack has been a major concern this season. Winless in their opening
four games (with one no-result), the Knight Riders have leaked runs in the death overs and missed the firepower of regular pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep. Head coach Abhishek Nayar and assistant Shane Watson had described Pathirana's return as a "waiting game," banking on his sling-arm yorkers to turn their fortunes.
Will Matheesha Pathirana Play Today for KKR?
Pathirana's arrival is still a massive boost for a struggling KKR side sitting at the bottom of the table. His explosive death-bowling could prove decisive in the second half of the league stage. For now, though, Rajasthan Royals - led by Riyan Parag and riding high on recent wins - face a KKR attack still searching for rhythm.
