This Sweden match was Mbappeβs 18th World Cup appearance for France. Only Hugo Lloris, with 20 games, and Antoine Griezmann,
with 19, have played more for France in the tournament. Since Mbappeβs World Cup debut in 2018, no player has scored more World Cup goals than Mbappeβs 18.
Across that same period, no player has produced more World Cup goal contributions than Mbappe, who has 22. Messi is next with 14 goals and 19 total contributions. Mbappe also has 10 goals from nine World Cup knockout games, moving above Leonidis and Ronaldo Nazario, who both scored eight knockout goals.
The numbers underline Mbappeβs attacking influence against Sweden. France attempted 25 shots, with expected goals of 3.17. Mbappe took five of those attempts, generating 0.63 expected goals. Oliseβs creative display added another historic World Cup mark for France. Olise finished the group stage on five assists, the most by any player at a single World Cup since Thomas Hassler provided five for Germany in 1994. That output supports Franceβs attack, which has become the first team to score three goals in five straight World Cup matches.
Didier Deschamps returned to the touchline for France, after missing time following the death of Deschampsβ mother. Sweden struggled to create much response before the interval and looked stretched across the defensive line.
France doubled the lead in the 53rd minute with another move built through Olise. Olise slipped a through ball between Gustaf Lagerbielkeβs legs, releasing Bradley Barcola. Barcola struck powerfully past Zetterstrom for 2-0. Olise continued chasing a first goal of the finals, forcing a fingertip save from distance and later seeing a low effort smothered.
Olise still added to the tally of assists. Another precisely weighted pass sent Mbappe clear, and Mbappe lifted the finish over Zetterstrom for 3-0. Sweden mounted a late push, with Gyokeres driving a low shot after reacting first to a loose ball, but Maignan stretched down to preserve a clean sheet.
