The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has received a conditional nod from the state government to resume matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium. This decision follows significant improvements made after a stampede incident on June 4.
KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad expressed that the ongoing enhancements are progressing well, aiming for completion by mid-February.
Prasad detailed the security upgrades at the stadium, including widening gates and creating holding areas. These changes are crucial for fire engine access and spectator safety. "We have widened the gates by six metres, breaking some walls around the stands," he explained. The goal is to have these modifications ready by February 6.
Fire Safety and Infrastructure Improvements
Fire safety protocols have been a major focus, as recommended
by the Justice D'Cunha Commission. Prasad noted that most fire safety measures are complete, with only a few tasks remaining. "The government requested a 50,000-litre underground capacity, but they accepted an overhead tank," he said. Currently, 30,000 litres are in place, with plans to add another 20,000 litres.
KSCA Secretary Santosh Menon highlighted efforts to enhance security for women and children. He mentioned that separate queues for them have been implemented as per the commission's suggestions. "We aim to make entry simpler and safer for everyone," Menon stated.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans
Prasad acknowledged the hard work of his team in restoring cricket at Chinnaswamy Stadium. They provided detailed plans and timelines to the government, securing permission to host IPL and international matches. "We engaged continuously with stakeholders to rebuild trust," Prasad remarked.
He expressed gratitude to Karnataka's government officials for their support in this process. "I thank Chief Minister Siddharamaiahji, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumarji, and Home Minister Dr. G. Parameswarji for their constructive discussions," Prasad added.
Upcoming Cricket Season and Digital Initiatives
The KSCA plans to announce a state cricket calendar for the 2026-27 season soon. This will include age-group and club events starting in April. "We decided to cease last season's activities and start fresh," Prasad said, mentioning that preparations are underway for a successful new season.
Efforts are also being made to digitise ticketing for IPL and international matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium. KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya stated that this move aims to reduce on-site counter rushes.
