Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs after a dominant 23-run victory over Punjab Kings in Dharamshala on Sunday.
Powered by half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer, along with a clinical new-ball spell from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, RCB moved to 18 points and sealed their place in the top four.
The result has also dramatically tightened the playoff race, especially for Punjab Kings, whose sixth straight defeat has pushed them into a dangerous position heading into the final week of the league stage.

RCB Qualification Scenario: Playoffs sealed, top-two race alive
RCB are now officially through to the playoffs with 18 points from 13 matches with a remaining match vs SRH.
What RCB need for top-two finish
- Win final game → guaranteed top-two finish
- Lose final game → could still finish top two depending on GT and SRH results
With the best NRR in the tournament (+1.053),
Bengaluru remain favourites to secure a Qualifier 1 spot.
PBKS Qualification Scenario: Punjab now on the brink
Punjab Kings have collapsed after an unbeaten start to the season and now sit with:
- 13 points from 13 matches
- six consecutive defeats
- only one league game remaining
Remaining match: vs LSG
What PBKS need to qualify
If PBKS win final game:
- Finish on 15 points
- Qualification still depends heavily on:
- RR dropping points
- CSK losing at least one game
- KKR failing to win out
- NRR calculations
If PBKS lose final game: Eliminated
Punjab's situation has become extremely complicated because 16 points is increasingly looking like the likely qualification cutoff.
At 15 maximum points, PBKS no longer control their own destiny.
What RCB's win changed in the playoff race
RCB becoming the first team to qualify has effectively:
- tightened pressure on PBKS
- increased the importance of SRH vs CSK
- pushed the likely qualification cutoff closer to 16 points
- made NRR a decisive factor for several teams
With just a handful of league matches remaining, nearly every fixture from here could directly impact the final top four.
