Mauricio Pochettino has emphasised that no player is guaranteed a spot in the USA's World Cup squad for next year. As co-hosts with Canada and Mexico, the USA automatically qualified for the tournament.
They are currently preparing with friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay. With Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams absent due to injuries, Pochettino is evaluating other players to finalise his squad.
Pochettino stated, "For me, these are the players that they deserve to be here and are the players that we want to see. They are the players that are our choice, our selection. " He stressed that even well-known players like Pulisic and Adams should not feel secure about their inclusion. According to him, "the federation is bigger than the names that [are in] the national team. "
Christian Pulisic has been a significant figure for the USA, with 82 appearances and 32 goals. However, he has only played six times in 2025 due to injuries. He missed two November matches after a hamstring injury during a friendly against Australia. Pochettino remarked on Pulisic's performance against Australia, noting it was perfect until his injury.
The focus remains on ensuring all players are fit by the World Cup's start. Pochettino aims to have everyone in top condition before finalising his roster. The upcoming matches against Paraguay on Saturday and Uruguay on Tuesday will provide further insights into potential squad members.

The USA's upcoming friendlies serve as crucial preparation for next year's World Cup. These matches offer an opportunity for emerging talents to showcase their skills and make a case for inclusion in the final squad. The absence of key players like Pulisic provides others a chance to step up.
Pochettino's approach highlights his commitment to selecting players based on current form rather than past achievements. This strategy ensures that only those who demonstrate readiness will represent the nation at the World Cup.
As preparations continue, maintaining player fitness remains a priority for Pochettino. His focus is on assembling a competitive team capable of performing well at home during the tournament.
