IPL 2026: In a competition as gruelling as the IPL, winning at home is non-negotiable. Yet Delhi Capitals have managed just a 28.57% win rate at Arun Jaitley Stadium since the current cycle began - a figure only marginally better than the home records of LSG and CSK. What makes this particularly striking is the strategic contradiction sitting beneath that number.
Capitals have deployed spin more than any other franchise this season, with 48.3% of their overs going to slow bowlers since 2025 - at a ground that has become one of the most hostile venues in the country for that very discipline.
Since 2024, Delhi's home has produced the second-worst economy rate for spinners across all established IPL venues. That misalignment was laid bare once again
when the home side's spin trio leaked 97 runs across eight overs, even as Rashid Khan dismantled the opposition with figures of 3 for 17 in a match that produced over 400 runs in total.
How Has DC's Worries Started In IPL?
The roots of this approach go back to the Axar Patel-Kuldeep Yadav partnership that anchored the Capitals' bowling in the 2022-2024 period. When Vipraj Nigam came into the fold last season, it gave the side a three-pronged spin attack, with Axar and Vipraj offering lower-order utility with the bat as well. That dual-purpose value allowed Delhi to get by with just three frontline pace bowlers, effectively guaranteeing spin would account for at least eight overs per game.
Meanwhile, the pitch has evolved in the opposite direction. The ground has shed a great deal of its earlier bite since the 2023 ODI World Cup, and its compact boundaries have only amplified how freely batters can score. Spinners have been hit at 9.55 runs per over at this venue since 2024 - a figure bettered only by Hyderabad across the league. Sunrisers, notably, have taken the opposite approach: spin makes up only 28.4% of their overs since 2025, one of the lowest proportions in the competition.
The individual numbers reinforce the problem. Both Kuldeep and Vipraj carry considerably better records when operating away from Delhi. Axar holds a stronger average at home but is harder to score off on the road. As a unit, the trio has consistently struggled to translate their wider capabilities into results at their own ground.
IPL 2026: Lengths, Margins, And A Match Lost By One
Poor execution has compounded the structural issues. Against the Titans, Delhi's spinners repeatedly failed to find the right lengths. The 25 balls bowled at a good length still went for 41 runs, largely through the slog-sweep, while shorter deliveries cost 35 off just 18 balls and six overpitched ones leaked 19.
It was a costly return in a match decided by a single run. Since the start of IPL 2024, overpitched spin deliveries at this venue have been punished at 13.57 runs per over, the highest such figure among all regular IPL grounds.
GT's Cheat Code Rashid Khan Delivers Yet Again
Rashid's spell provided a sharp point of contrast. He landed close to half his deliveries on a good length and conceded only four runs from those balls while taking two wickets. Even when he erred slightly, he stayed on the fuller side of back of a length, consistently denying batters the room to free their arms.
With five home fixtures still remaining, Delhi's campaign could hinge on whether their spinners can adapt quickly enough. A first playoff berth since 2021 remains within reach - but only if the team's tactical approach begins to reflect the ground beneath their feet.
